7th Engineer Brigade was formed in June 1969 through the consolidation of two former engineer groups: the 540th Engr Gp and the 555th Egr Gp. Global War on Terrorism: 891st Engineer Battalion The 891st Engineer Battalion was originally constituted as the 891st Engineer Aviation Battalion in the Air National Guard on 25 March 1953 and was subsequently allotted to the Kansas Army National Guard on 1 August 1953. Over 500 soldiers of the 891st Engineer Battalion reported to their armories on Sept. 21, 2004 to begin their mobilization for Operation Iraqi Freedom Operating from Camp Sapper II, Tallil Air Base, Iraq, the 891st soldiers had been involved in operation of security points, roving patrols, route reconnaissance, bridge reconnaissance, escort duty, interactions with the Iraqi nationals, and other stabilizing actions.

On June 14, 1969, the 7th Engineer Brigade relocated to Ludendorff Kaserne ("kaserne" is a loanword from German that means "barracks") in Kornwestheim to join VII Corps, at which time the Brigade activated six battalions under its headquarters. On 17 March 1944, the 542nd Parachute Infantry Regiment was deactivated and reactivated as the 542nd Parachute Infantry Battalion, utilizing the 3rd Battalion, 542nd Parachute Infantry Regiment. 400 men were sent as replacements to the 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, then fighting in the Anzio beachhead on the Italian Front. The battalion remained at Fort Benning, Georgia, until 1 July 1944, when it was relocated to Camp Mackall, North Carolina, where it was attached to Airborne Center Command Headquarters, an attachment that would last for one year. While at Mackall, the battalion became an experimental unit of sorts.

The 555th Parachute Infantry Battalion, nicknamed The Triple Nickles, was an all-black airborne unit of the United States Army during World War II. On 19 December 1943, Headquarters, Army Ground Forces, authorized the activation of the company as an all-black unit with black officers as well as black enlisted men. All unit members were to be volunteers, with an enlisted cadre to be selected from personnel of the 92nd Infantry Division at Fort Huachuca, Arizona.
