Lodgepole Pines Yellowstone Wyoming by Debra Martz The most common cone-bearing trees in this national park are lodgepole pines, which cover as much as 80% of Yellowstone. The name Lodgepole is derived from some American Indian tribs which used this tree to frame their tipis or lodges. At the Old Faithful Inn you will find log walls also made with the lodgepole pine. The dead lodgepole pine trees in the foreground, seen at the Fountain Paint Pot boardwalk, are pioneers that did not survive. These trees drowned when the nearby hot springs shifted, in addition, silica also penetrated the trees and hardened their bases. In the background, some succumbed to death by pine beetles. ©Debra Martz, All Rights Reserved In My Gallery/Colle...
