So this image came about due to thinking about the optical qualities of glass... Working to a product standard and wanting to capture something - that little bit different... I worked out in the field to get this capture and worked in post to create this effect... I have always loved the iridescent colour of kingfishers and think their colours ~ depending on the angle of incidence... reflect that of a rainbow... So what better to do - than to represent both! :D

Giving free rein to my love of birds! My goal is to draw as many species as possible, both close to home and less-known.

I've seen many a silhouette in my time and also produced quite a few silhouettes too... but I find it increasingly difficult to find something that actually works... I think the key is ~ to give something away in a silhouette, but not everything... and leave the eye of the viewer to work things out... If its overly obvious for me... it might not work... A classic example of an almost silhouette was that of a slow shutter speed bison in the snow that was nicely illustrated in the Wildlife Photographer of the Year just recently... Almost like a reverse negative... as it was framed with an all white snowy background and the precise shutter speed created that streaky snowy look with a grey cold and wintery almost silhouette like distinct...

So last summer - I literally spent hours and hours on stakeout awaiting for this blue little beastie to turn up along my local shores... I had heard of his presence by a few reputable connections in the area and spent hours down by the river - looking for him or her (?) and trying to work out its ecological behaviour... It seems Kingfishers have certain spots which they frequent and spent time on these 'perches'... This one I spotted early one morning almost like being in a meditative state - zoned out or in ~ gazing at this white spot of bird poo on a big wooden tree branch... I can only surmise that - it was watching for insects such as flies ~ which would come and land near or on the bird poo and then pick them off from th...
