Allotment Crewneck Sweatshirts

This is the second of my pencil sketches of the sheds down on my local allotment. I find the lack of perfection, quirky angles and makeshift construction and repair makes them a fascinating subject, though drawing so much wood grain can be a bit tedious.

I spent 6 weeks in various allotments in England studying the fascinating structures that gardeners create out of everyday objects. The most drawn allotment was in Bucklands Hill in Maidstone, Kent. This is the third of a series of three, a possible triptych, but i feel work well as individual prints as well. It shows the Compost aspect of the title, I witnessed a lot of clever ways to keep compost at the allotment. It turns out composting your waste is not as simple as just putting it in a heap and waiting. There has to be very specific ratios of dry to wet waste, or green and brown waste. If this ratio is off, the decomposition process comes to a halt. You can see in the examples that many of the bins are composed of interchangeable parts

This is the third of a series of three, a possible triptych, but i feel work well as individual prints as well. It shows the Cover aspect of the title, the hodge-podge shelters that the gardeners have scrapped together to make either somewhere to keep dry when the summer rains make an appearance, or just sit and listen to the radio to get away from it all. Although, most of them i found were used for practical uses. They had perspex, glass or clear plastic fabric sections to act as a greenhouse.

Hiding out at the allotment During the lockdown, life for my little family between painting, homeschooling and working on a new store in France, has been spent hiding out at our allotment. There we can focus on growing our vegetables for the next 4 seasons, digging and build new structures and find solace from the craziness of the worldwide lockdown. It's great for family bonding. My daughter has her own garden where she grows fruit and flowers. There we feel free to create outside and can almost forget all the rules and regulations that overshadow our lives at this time. Owlsbury allotments are so beautiful. They encompass a meadow surrounded by beautiful farmland. If you arrive early and sneak in quietly, you can catch the bird...

They explained to me that you can use anything that is water and light tight but pierce-able so as to give drainage.
