Lark Sparrow Early Morning by Debra Martz While having coffee outdoors at my campsite several mornings in a row, I had begun to notice the habits of the birds as they started their day. The Lark Sparrow (Chondestes grammacus) along with the Black-throated Sparrows would forage mostly from the ground but would also perch on this low snag. Just finished this painting, it was barely dry by the time I was scanning it in. I’m not too fond of this piece, The techniques I used to paint this didn’t work too much in my favour and the overall result came out more messy than I planned. The idea was to create a vibrant, marble like watercolour to reflect the peacock’s colour scheme, but the watercolours would bleed and simply not dry quickly enough to create random colour variations. I think part of the probem was the composition here, since the body of the peacock is relatively small when the feathers are included and although they are part of the main characteristic associated with peacocks, there’s a lot of blank space and un-interesting colour in the feather area.

While I liked the capture of the vulture, the winds had been high which makes the water murky and I didn't find that attractive so off to Topaz Studio I went. Common Gallinule at Edge of Water by Debra Martz It's not often that I see the full length of the colorful legs and feet of the Galinule (Gallinula galeata) so I was quite pleased as this one posed on the outer edge of the water. I, also, liked the patterns made by the movement of the brackish marsh water at Leaonabelle Birding Center of Port Aransas, Texas. I found it rather odd to see this Double-crested Cormorant drying its wings while in the flowing water over the spillway. More commonly, this would be done on a rock, dock, shoreline or such. But this one seemed perfectly content in this location for wing drying. High winds churn up the dirts of the shallow lake bottom and even brought some heavy streaking flowing over from the upper tier of the spillway. Couch's Kingbird - Dragonfly for Lunch by Debra Martz We heard this kingbird calling as it flew through the treetops around noon at Estero LLano Grande State Park. Finally it landed up high, looked around for awhile, then swooped down and caught this dragonfly. This huge dragonfly!! It worked on it for a while, tossing and tapping on the limb in an effort to try and remove the wings. But in the end, ate the dragonfly, wings and all!!

Great Kiskadee Departs The Nest - Painterly While walking the main trail at Bentsen - Rio Valley Grande State Park I spotted a pair of Kiskadees working very hard to build their nest. When one would leave the other would be right there with its next materials for the nest. Young White Ibis Feeding in the Grass by Martz There was a family of Ibis feeding on insects in this grassy area located near the Intracoastal waterway in Port A, Texas. There were the all white adults, a few immatures and juveniles. Proud Snowy Egret by Debra Martz There were a few dozen Snowies on this peninsula below the spillway. They are known for their attitude and territorial ways but this one was the winner hands down! It was either running or flying at each of the others in an attempt to make them leave this fishing spot. He was fairly successful at chasing off the majority. It had just attacked the one in the background which was walking away. Location: Great Salt Plains State Park in northern Oklahoma. Roseate Spoonbill at Sunrise by Debra Martz A great place to be for sunrise as many birds arrive at the pond to start feeding. If I lived in Weslaco, Texas, I would be on the deck at the Estero LLano Grande State Park as many mornings as possible. The sunrise adds a beautiful golden glow to the pond; combining that glow with the wonderful sounds of all the birds is a great, refreshing way to start the day! Scientific name: Platalea ajaja

Cedar Waxwings Migrating North by Debra Martz We were at Paradise Pond in Port Aransas, Tx and I was tracking a Magnolia Warbler with my lens when my husband Doug called out, "Look up!" And of course, I did!! This is just a portion of the very large flock of Waxwings that flew over us. Happy to have seen this but sure would have been nice if they would have decided to circle around and land in a tree nearby. Obviously to early in the day to stop on their northbound migration on this day, May 14th. Cedar Waxwings are a shiny collection of brown, gray, and lemon-yellow, accented with a subdued crest, black mask, and brilliant-red wax droplets on the wing feathers. Little Blue Heron in the Treetop by Debra Martz This was a rarity for me to see one of these herons fly to the treetop and land. Having lived southern Texas along the gulf, I saw plenty of these birds but they would fly into a marsh or wetland area and do their wade fishing.
