Beauceron Dog Often mistaken for a Rottweiler, the Beauceron is a herding dog breed originating from the plains of Central France. The Beauceron is also known as Berger de Beauce (sheepdog from Beauce) or Bas Rouge (red-stockings). This breed's most distinctive feature is its hind double dewclaws, forming a pair of independent "thumbs" on the rear legs. Beauceron dogs were used extensively in the search and rescue efforts in the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City on September 11, 2001. By Paul Thompson Photography
