This is a digital painting from my own photograph. The Valley of the Nuns is hidden away in the steep Madeiran mountains. In 1566 the nuns from the Santa Clara convent in the capital Funchal fled from pirates attacking Funchal and found seclusion here. Until relatively recently, the village could only be accessed with considerable difficulty due to the cliffs and peaks surrounding it. A tunnel southwards in the direction of Funchal now offers safe access to the valley.

The Holy Island of Lindisfarne Fishing Rope After leaving the main road you are greeted with a tidal causeway which brings you to Holy Island and this road keeps it cut off from the rest of the world for at least half of the day or night. These ropes took my eye and I had to use them as a focal point to the castle behind.
