Fountains Abbey is one of the largest and best preserved ruined Cistercian monasteries in England.

This is an image of the 'Cellarium' at Fountains Abbey, in North Yorkshire, England. As I understand it, this large space was used to store the harvest yield. While much of Fountains Abbey was destroyed during King Henry VIII-ordered dissolution of the monasteries, this extraordinary structure survived. What I love about this image is the light from the open windows and how it illuminates the truly amazing vaulted ceiling. Considering that this place was essentially a barn, it was built with such lasting care.

Situated in North Yorkshire, this is a magnificent example of an ancient ruin, well worth a visit if you ever get chance.

Centenary Fountain, Forde Abbey Number of views as of 19th July 2016 = 450. Forde Abbey is a former Cistercian monastery on the Dorset/Somerset border in the South-West of England. Now privately owned and run as a tourist attraction, the Abbey is set on a 1600 acre estate, including 30 acres of beautiful gardens, featuring several ponds and the 160 feet (48 metre) high Centenary Fountain shown in this shot, the highest powered fountain in England. Although the Abbey is actually in Dorset, the nearest large town (and also the Abbey's mailing address) is Chard in Somerset. Date: 31st July 2015.
