Glass Tower Crewneck Sweatshirts

Architect Doug Roberts returns to San Francisco for the dedication of the Glass Tower, which he designed for developer James Duncan. The tower, 1,688 feet (515 m) tall and 138 stories, is the world's tallest building. During testing, an electrical short starts an undetected fire on the 81st floor just after another such short occurs in the main utility room. Upon learning this, Roberts sees the wiring is inadequate and suspects that Roger Simmons, the electrical subcontractor and Duncan's son-in-law, cut corners. Roberts confronts Simmons, who feigns innocence.

I recently spent a day in Toronto, in the business district, looking up at the many very tall buildings. They're office buildings, of course, but clearly designed to catch the eye. I love the reflections on the building to the left. Each pane of glass wasn't quite square with its neighbour, so the reflection of the adjacent tower looks as if it came off water.

This window in the Kings Private Chapel in the Tower of London may have been the last thing King Henry VI saw. He died here in 1471 during the war of the roses. One side said he died of melancholy, the other said he was stabbed as he prayed.

While visiting Vancouver, I was really intrigued by the wonderful reflections that appeared on the glass-covered office towers. While absolutely essential, photographers hate the power cables that line North American city streets. My solution for this image was to turn my camera about 45 degrees so my viewpoint looked between the cables. The result is a wonderful abstraction that I hope you'll enjoy.

Nelson’s Monument on the crest of Calton Hill in Edinburgh, Scotland, replaced an existing mast with a signal-tower high enough to be visible to ships on the Firth of Forth and commemorates Admiral Lord Nelson’s death at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. it is shaped like a spy glass, and from the top (unlike Nelson himself, who saw no ships) you can see the ships on the River. The stone structure is 106 ft high with 143 steps from a base 456 ft above sea level. The really smart aspect of this tower is the time signal installed at its top in 1852 to enable ships’ captains to set their chronometers accurately. A large time-ball drops on weekdays, at 12pm in Winter and 1pm in Summer coinciding with Edinburgh Castle’s One o’Clock gun.

High Rise Sky Scrapers

Water Street, in the Gastown district of Vancouver, has some splendid examples of late Victorian architecture, but I was really taken with the juxtaposition of this early architecture with the very modern tower that appears to be growing from it. To top that off, sorry about the pun, I couldn't ignore the trees growing on the roof and those in front of the more earth bound buildings.
