Gargoyles were commonly used in medieval times. Their two main purposes were to scare off evil, and to divert rainwater. Many had open mouths and long necks because they functioned as downspouts to divert rainwater from building foundations.

Vintage Castel

The Tower of Refuge is a stone-built castellated structure which was erected on St Mary’s Isle in Douglas Bay, Isle of Man, in order to afford shelter to mariners wrecked on the rock. The tower was constructed through the endeavours of Sir William Hillary, who had been instrumental in several rescues of sailors stranded on the rock, and which culminated in the heroic rescue of the crew of the Saint George Steam Packet Company steamer RMS St George, when it foundered on the rock in the early hours of November 20, 1830.

Late afternoon sunlight falling on the parish church of St Peter and St Paul in Checkendon, Oxfordshire, England. The church dates from the C12th and is a Grade 1 listed building. It was probably built by the Normans though aspects of the building styles suggests it might have Saxon origins. Inside there are medieval brasses and early C13th wall paintings. One relatively modern window was designed by Lawrence Whistler (1962). Checkendon village sits in the southern Chiltern Hills not far from the Thames. Nikon D7100 Nikkor 18-200
