James Forten was born a freeman in Philadelphia. At the age of 14, he served in the Revolutionary War on the privateer “Royal Louis” under Captain Stephen Decatur, Sr. In 1781, the “Royal Louis” was captured by the British. After the war, James became a prominent businessman and abolitionist in Philadelphia. I am not certain which position he held on the “Royal Louis,” so I drew him in the midshipman uniform.

Noon meal formation is a United States Naval Academy tradition that began in 1905. This was the most efficient way to ensure all midshipmen were accounted for.

The Noon Meal Formation is held weather permitting weekdays during the academic year and Monday through Saturday during Plebe Summer. Plebe Summer is the summer new midshipmen begin their four-year program.
