Here you can see 2 of the major monasteries of Meteora , the Varlaam monastery, on the left and Roussanou Monastery in the centre, surround by fog. Varlaam monastery took its name by the first monk who climbed the 595 metres of the vertical rock in the 14th century, Varlaam, the one who built the first church on the rock. (although in the photo it seems that this rock is connected with the rest of the land, it's not true, the only way to reach there was to climb, nowadays you can reach through a bridge). Roussanou monastery (or Agias Varvaras monastery) was established probably in 1388 by monks Necodemos and Benediktos.

Monasteries on the top of Giant rocks seem miraculous and make Meteora one of the most spectacular places in Greece.

This is Varlaam Monastery, one of the 6 still "active" monasteries of Meteora (Trikala, Thessaly, Greece). Once upon a time there were 24 monasteries in this exciting region. The first one who climbed this rock, was an anchorite, named Varlaam around 1350 (that's where the name of the monastery comes from), who built a small church. After his death, the rock remained uninhabited for more than a century. In the beggining of the 16th century, two brothers, Nektarios and Theofanis climbed the rock. In 1518 they started reconstructing the church that Varlaam had built, and also built two more churchs. With the help of other monks that later climbed the rock they built the monastic "complex" that you can see in the photo and covers almost...

This is part of the path that leads to Selime monastery (Aksaray, Cappadocia, Turkey) , going up a steep hillside, that it's an atraction of its own! Here you see one of the many tunnels with carved stairs leading to the monastic complex. In the background, through the hole, you can see part of the fascade from one of the many rock cut cave-churches of the monastery. The region of Cappadocia is a World Heritage Site by Unesco.

The monastery that you see nestled in the rocks (a 4-storey building, looking so small in front of the majestic rocks), is Saint Nicholas Anapafsas, one of the 6 still active monasteries (once upon a time they were 24) in Meteora (Trikala, Thessaly, Greece) This one was established around the 14th century. The monastic complex of Meteora is a World Heritage Site by Unesco.

The Frankish monastery of Isova, at Trypiti village (Andritsaina-Krestena Municipality), Ileia, Peloponnese, Greece. It was built around 1225 by Catholic monks. It is one of the best examples of Gothic architecture in Greece. Camera: Canon EOS 1Ds Mark III

Roussanou Monastery (Meteora, Trikala, Thessaly, Greece) is also know as Agias Varvaras Monastery. It was established (probably) around 1388 by the monks Necodemus and Benedict. Today functions as a nunnery. Open to visitors daily, except Wednesday, from 09:00-14:00 (winter) and 09:00-18:00 (summer).

The Profitis Ilias & Metamorphoseos ("Prophet Elias & Tranfiguration of Christ") monastery, very close to Chaliki village, Aspropotamos, Trikala, Greece.

*Buckfast Abbey* Buckfast Abbey, near Buckfastleigh (Devon, England) was originally founded in AD 1018. Originally a Benedictine house, it later became a Savignac, and then a Cistercian abbey, before being surrendered in 1539 as part of the dissolution. The site was purchased in 1882 (again by the Benedictines) and work began on the current abbey (dedicated to Saint Mary) in 1907, and was completed in 1938. Date: 23rd September 2017.
