Montmartre was a separate village just north of Paris, and not incorporated into the city, until 1860.

The Basilica of Sacre Coeur on the summit of the hill at Montmatre. Construction on this famous Paris landmark was begun in 1875 and was finished in 1914. However, due to the outbreak of the First World War, it was not consecrated until 1919 following the end of hostilities. Situated on the highest point in Paris, it commands magnificent views over the city - once the flights of steps have been negotiated! Being in the Artists quarter of Motmatre, it is a favourite subject for paintings.

Sacre Coeur, on the crest of the butte Montmatre, the highest point of the city and within the famous artists' quarter, was designed by Paul Abadie, construction starting in 1875. However, it was not completed until 1914 and was finally consecrated after the end of World War 1 in 1919.
