Dark Satanic Mills Whilst painting outside in the rain I added media/paint to the surface which then washed and spread and finally formed shapes which remained, these reminded me of smoke and dust and pollution rising from an Industrial factories from 1760 to the mid to late 1800's, hence the title. I added some impasto marks to represent, in a semi-abstract way, the factories themselves utilising dark compressed tight hues intersperced with minor flecks of colour thus giving a further perception of atmosphere and depth. This effect, painting technique, can only be achieved by saturating the media, in this case 300lb Saunders Waterford rough hand made water colour paper, which is resilient enough not to degrade yet slowly abs...
