Gargoyles have guarded Paris since ancient times. During the day, they look at the city from Notre Dame, and at night, as one legend says, they leave their home and fly in the sky. There is also a legend that says that the gargoyle is a dragon-like snake, which lived in France, in the Seine River. She spewed water with great force, overturned fishing boats and flooded houses. Scientists believe that the gargoyles acting as drainpipes are just architectural fantasy inspired by dark medieval traditions. Notre Dame de Paris Notre-Dame de Paris , referred to simply as Notre-Dame, is a medieval Catholic cathedral on the Île de la Cité (an island in the Seine River), in the 4th arrondissement of Paris. The cathedral, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, is considered one of the finest examples of French Gothic architecture. It is believed that before the arrival of Christianity in France, a Gallo-Roman temple dedicated to Jupiter stood on the site of Notre-Dame. Evidence for this includes the Pillar of the Boatmen, discovered beneath the cathedral in 1710. In the 4th or 5th century, a large early Christian church, the Cathedral of Saint Étienne, was built on the site, close to the royal palace. By Paul Thompson Photography

Just outside of Notre Dame Cathedral embedded in the concrete of the public square is a small geographic marker from which the distance from Paris to all other places are judged. Paris Point Zero marks the supposedly exact center of the city or country, and all other locations are thought to be measured as a distance radiating from this point. It is marked by an octagonal brass plate that is set into the concrete of the square. With the marker's very low profile, and the millions of people congregating in the square everyday, some tourists (like myself) have a hard time even finding it. Bernadette Soubirous reported the Marian Apparitions at Lourdes, France at the grotto of Massabielle in 1858. The Roman Catholic Church, declared the apparitions to be worthy of belief after a canonical investigation, and the apparition is known as Our Lady of Lourdes. In 1958, Pope Pius XII issued the encyclical Le pèlerinage de Lourdes The pilgrimage to Lourdes on the 100th anniversary of the apparitions. Pope John Paul II visited Lourdes three times; Pope Benedict XVI visited Lourdes on 15 September 2008 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the apparitions. Soubirous was canonized a saint in 1933 by Pope Pius XI. Miracles, miraculous healings are reported through the Holy Water and Rosary Prayers.
