One Room Schoolhouse Crewneck Sweatshirts

In the 19th and early 20th centuries, most American students attended a one-room schoolhouse. All of the students met in a single room where a single teacher taught several grades.

Small rural communities that covered a large distance came together to form a schoolhouse. The school was located so that none of the students had to walk more than 2 miles a day. Even in 2012 there are still 200 one room schoolhouses.

In the one room schoolhouse, there was no such thing as a cafeteria. Students brought there own lunch to school in various containers such as pails or baskets. The cloth across the basket was often used as a tablecloth.

The one room schoolhouse was very important to small rural communities where children met in a single room and several grades were taught by a single teacher.

One room schoolhouses were about four miles apart and the farthest a student might walk was about two miles. The one room schoolhouse had one teacher who taught first to eighth grade.

I discovered this small school house while exploring the backroads of Prince Edward Island. I wanted to create a photograph that related to the schools past. Including the road sign completed the story in this image. There are many crossroads located in PEI that have retained their historic name from early settlement times. Canoe Cove is one of them. The Canoe Cove School was built in approximately the year 1850. School consolidation swept the Island in the 1960s, and small schools, including Canoe Cove, were put out to pasture.
