Late afternoon sunlight falling on the parish church of St Peter and St Paul in Checkendon, Oxfordshire, England. The church dates from the C12th and is a Grade 1 listed building. It was probably built by the Normans though aspects of the building styles suggests it might have Saxon origins. Inside there are medieval brasses and early C13th wall paintings. One relatively modern window was designed by Lawrence Whistler (1962). Checkendon village sits in the southern Chiltern Hills not far from the Thames. Nikon D7100 Nikkor 18-200

A vintage style black and white image developed from my original phoyograph of the parish church of St Mary the Virgin at Ipsden in Oxfordshire. This picturesque old church stands on the southern edge of the Chiltern Hills overlooking the Thames Valley and is surrounded by farmland. Originally a small Saxon chapel, it was enlarged in the 12th century with stones from a nearby church which had fallen into disrepair.

Two double sculls racing under the arches of the bridge at. Henley-on-Thames in Oxfordshire, Henley is most famous for its annual Royal Regatta which (in normal times) happens every July. The races are run between Temple Island and a finishing line just downstream of the Bridge - a distance of 1 mile 550 yards. Begun in 1839, the Regatta achieved its 'Royal' status when Albert became patron, The bridge itself dates from 1786. This image is produced in the style of a coloured pencil drawing.

A digital art view of the Thames Path as it wends its way towards the village of Goring-on-Thames in Oxfordshire. The Thames Path is a national long distance trail 184 miles (296 km) long which starts at Kemble in Gloucestershre near one of the attributed sources at Thames Head (the other being Seven Springs). It finishes at the Thames Barrier flood defence in London. Here it passes through the Goring Gap - a narrow space between the North Wessex (Berkshire) Downs and the Chiltern Hills.

Further ahead is Marsh Lock and weir. The Thames Path is a long-distance National trail from the Cotswolds to London. Picturesque Henley is most noted for the annual Royal Regatta which attracts top rowers from all over the world. This is a digital pencil drawing.

Looking upstream of the River Thames towards the market town of Abingdon in Oxfordshire. Overhead gulls are wheeling and crying whilst two ducks paddle by. In the background is the spire of St Helen's church which dates form the early 12th century. A landmark in the area, it inspired the artist JMW Turner, featuring in a painting titled 'Abingdon'. Although now in Oxfordshire, Abingdon was, until 1867, the county town of Berkshire before that status was transferred to Reading.

A canalside scene at Shipton-on-Cherwell in Oxfordshire, England. The Oxford canal here is overlooked by the parish church of Holy Cross. The church and village predate the canal by several centuries - the River Cherwell being the only waterway then! There has been a church here since the C12th but after a number of additions it was demolished in 1831 and the present Gothic Revival one built. The canal arrived in 1788, built to link the Midland canals with the Thames at Oxford and thence to London. Nikon D7100 Nikkor 18-200

An artistic view of the bridge over the River Thames at Clifton Hampden in Oxfordshire. This handsome bridge with its gothic arches was built in 1867 to replace a previous ferry service which had existed since medieval times. The architect was Sir George Gilbert Scott who also designed the Midland Grand Hotel at St Pancras. It was originally a toll bridge but this ended in 1946 when the local councils bought it from the private owners. This view is from the Thames Path national trail.

A digital oil painting from my original photograph of a large vintage boat moored on the bank of the River Thames at Henley in Oxfordshire. This lovely old boat is almost a floating garden with containers of plants on the deck! The image was captured on a walk along the Thames Path just above Henley. Across the river is the Berkshire bank of the river. After a sunny day it's now clouding over!

The parish church of Holy Cross at Shipton on Cherwell in Oxfordshire, England. The present church was built in 1831 after the previous building had been demolished. However, there has been a church here since the C12th - and a Saxon font gives a hint to a longer history. Originally named Holy Cross, in the C18th it was changed to St Mary and then to St Jerome before reverting to its original name. Shipton is in the Cherwell valley, the canal arriving in 1788, passing closely by the churchyard. Nikon D7100 Nikkor 18-200

The lock at Iffley on the Thames near Oxford as digital art. At this point the river is properly called The Isis and as you walk along the Thames Path from here to Oxford you pass the Oxford University's college boathouses. The village of Iffley itself is a conservation area, its narrow streets leading down to the river where you cross the weir to reach the lock.

This very elegant town hall sits in the centre of the town of Abingdon-on-Thames in Oxfordshire, England. The town was once in Berkshire and until 1867 was the County Town. The town hall, now a Grade 1 listed building was constructed between 1678 and 1682. It was designed to house the county courtroom above a sheltered market space. Both the master mason, Christopher Kempster and the clerk of works, John Scarborough were associates of Sir Christopher Wren whose influence can be seen. Nikon D7100 Nikkor 18-200

A digital oil painting of St Mary's Church in the village of Cholsey, Oxfordshire, just south of the market town of Wallingford. The church has a long history, apparently being originally built as an abbey church by King Ethelred in about 986. It received a mention in the Domesday Book following the Norman Conquest and they extensively rebuilt it. The churchyard is famous as the last resting place of crime writer Agatha Christie who lived in Cholsey for the last 40 years of her life.

This peaceful backwater is immediately next to the rushing waters of Benson weir on the River Thames in Oxfordshire. This was photographed in late August and the lush green foliage rather belies the hot, dry weather we had experienced durung the summer! The image was taken from the Thames Path which, if coming from Wallingford, has just passed over the lock and weir at Benson. Carrying on to the left we reach a riverside cafe and bistro - just right for refreshments before the return walk!

A coxless pair race past Temple Island at Remenham, Berkshire, very near Henley on Thames. This section of the river is famous for the annual Henley Royal Regatta held in early July. Temple Island is situated between Henley and Hambleden. It dates from 1771 and was designed by the architect James Wyatt as a fishing lodge for a nearby house. It's now owned by Henley Royal Regatta and has been completely restored to its former glory. It marks the start of the regatta course which finishes just below Henley Bridge. The River Thames as it flows between the villages of Streatley in Berkshire, England to the south and Goring in Oxfordshire to the north. This is a break between the North Wessex (Berkshire) Downs and the Chiltern Hills known as the Goring Gap. This is the view looking west from the bridge. Moored on the left is one of the old Oxford College barges - now an events venue for the hotel on the river bank. To the right the Thames rushes over the weir, boats passing through the lock.
