One of our local Chiltern red kites taking off from the bell cote of an old disused church, lit by the late afternoon sun. The red kite (milvus milvus) was, not long ago, on the edge of extinction in England but a highly successful breeding and re-introduction programme has seen them flourish and they can frequently be seen soaring and circling above.

Although the red kite is regarded as a bird of prey its usual diet is of carrion and worms, although it will very occasionally take small mammals. It was successfully reintroduced into England and is now gradually spreading throughout the country. The bird here was is pictured against a digitally added sky and was taken in Northamptonshire.

Strolling along a Northamptonshire footpath on a sunny Summer's day, along with the buzzing of the bees, you're likely to hear the call of a red kite (Milvus Milvus) that will be soaring high on a thermal in the blue sky or, later in the day, heading for it's evening roost. The Red Kite became extinct in the UK but has been the subject of a successful reintroduction programme - particularly in Wales and in Northamptonshire.,

A red kite soaring high on thermals in a Summer sky as it uses its incredible eyesight to search for prey across the Northamptonshire countryside. Red Kites are top predators and have a varied diet, eating both live and dead prey. Red Kites were once common, but persecution drove them almost to extinction in Britain. Following reintroductions of Red Kites from Europe in the 1980s, the numbers have slowly been increasing.

A red jellyfish, the only one of its kind, sees a red kite high up in the world above and longs to go with it, thinking they are brothers.
