The school opened in 1889 and was sold in 1987 when 19 individual Scotch whisky companies jointly invested £2 million in order to create a permanent exhibition on the history and development of whisky. Foot Of The Royal Mile, Edinburgh

The Royal Mile has always drawn me. A mysterious and perpetually shadowy place of ghosts, bloodshed and drama, the embodiment of Scottish history. Decades ago, on summer holidays, tartan-trousered guides, playing to the audience in hammed up accents, to the palace, to the now defunct wax museum and to the Castle, eager for the drama of the one o’clock gun. It was darker then, before the opening of the Scottish Parliament, with the alleys and closes distinctly insalubrious. I still love to venture down here, often a night when the spirits hint at their presence, when the moon hangs over the kirkyards. The work depicts a brightly painted building near the foot of the street. A perfect gift, a great memory of Edinburgh.

St Giles' Cathedral is the historic City Church of Edinburgh, Scotland. With its famed crown spire it stands near the top of the Royal Mile between Edinburgh Castle and the Palace of Holyroodhouse. Also known as the High Kirk of Edinburgh, it is the Mother Church of Presbyterianism and contains the Chapel of the Order of the Thistle (Scotland's chivalric company of knights headed by the Queen). St Giles' was founded in the 1120s when the Scottish royal family, the sons of Queen (Saint) Margaret and King Malcolm Canmore, especially David I (1124-1153) made strenuous efforts to spread Catholic Christian worship throughout the Scottish lowlands. Free Church of Scotland Assembly Hall, Edinburgh, Scotland. A 19th century church (also known as St Columba's Free Church), situated just off the Royal Mile at the junction of Castlehill, Johnston Terrace and Upper Bow. Designed by Thomas Hamilton, built between 1843-5 with alterations in 1908 by Thomas Ruskin. An Ecclesiastical building still in use as such. Originally called the Free St John's Church, built immediately after the Disruption of 1843. Hamilton's pulpit was sketched by Ruskin, who thought it an 'abomination.' Its gothic spire - the highest point in central Edinburgh - towers over the surrounding buildings, including the adjacent castle. The building was designed in collaboration by Edinburgh architect J Gillespie Graham, and the famous gothic revivalist Augustus Pugin, and constructed between 1842 and 1845. The inside houses the Hub Cafe; Hub Tickets, the central box office for the International Festival, which also sells tickets for a wide range of other events; a Main Hall with a capacity of 420, used as a venue for concerts and two smaller venues.

King David I of Scotland founded St Giles’ in 1124. St Giles’ was built on the very eastern edge of Edinburgh and pre-dates most of the Old Town. The church was renovated in the 1800s, firstly buy William Burn, then by William Chambers, who added the beautiful blue ceiling.
