One of the oldest bridges spanning the River Tyne, the High Level Bridge was completed in 1849. It was designed by Robert Stephenson in the early days of the railways to provide a rail link to Scotland. the bridge is still in use and provides an interesting walk for pedestrians heading towards the Castle and Cathedral of Newcastle upon Tyne that can both be seen in the right of the picture. There are many well known bridges on the River Tyne around Newcastle upon Tyne. There are four of those bridges in this picture. The famous Tyne Bridge, beneath this, the High Level Bridge, then the blue Metro Bridge and finally the red Swing Bridge which was opened in 1876. The quayside in Newcastle upon Tyne provides visitors a pleasant walk alongside the river to view these bridges.
