DescriptionA summers day, looking at St Johns Church Wapping London from the graveyard, Captain Bligh, of the famous mutiny on the Bounty lived in Wapping and was married in this church, most of his children were christened here to. Wapping is steeped in history and I have captured this in my paintings in and around Wapping. This was painted on a 20 by 30 inch canvas in oils. Wapping was originally a Saxon settlement, believed to be that of Waeppa's people, and although it is not known exactly where the original site of the village was, it is known that this area was marshland until the 16th century when it was drained. Wapping High Street, showing Pier Head, and the famous Town of Ramsgate Public House, Men pressed ganged into serving on ships and convicts destined for transportation to the Colonies, were held in cellars at the pub. Execution Dock was situated nearby. Men were hanged then chained to posts in the river, the tide rising over them three times before their bodies were removed. It was on Wapping Old Stairs, next to the pub, in 1688, that Judge Jeffries (the Hanging Judge) was captured whilst trying to flee the country dressed as a sailor. painted in oils on a 24 by 12 inch canvas

I PAINTED THIS SCENE OF PARTOF WAPPING HIGH STREET IN 1980, LOOKING WEST TOWARDS THE CAPTAIN KID PUB AND ST JOHNS WHARF NEWLY REBUILT, JUST BEFORE THE LADY WALKING TOWARDS YOU IS BLACK AND WHITE BOLLARD, It's made from a Napoleonic cannon and was put there c1850 to protect pedestrians from horses and carts mounting the pavement as they turned the corner. To the left is one of the last remaining Victorian style art nouveau street lamp post. the street was re-cobbled at some time after this and now not so worn as the original, making an awful noise when cars travel down the street. I lived in Gun Wharf, to the left of the picture, and a print of this painting still hangs in the entrance hall.

Another local for me when I lived in Wapping, The White Swan and Cuckoo in Wapping Lane, painted in the 80's when I was known as The Wapping Artist, painting and Exhibiting in the communal Hall at St Peters. I painted this scene to be used on a Christmas card for the residence of Wapping back in the 80's when I was known as The Wapping Artist. now you can have it in print or even use it yourself as a Christmas card, something unique and not on the mass market.

I painted this as a commission for my friend Jimmy, he is a great supporter of my art and I know he won't mind sharing it, He wanted the church as it was seen as a child from his home in Wapping

I travel to London at least once a year and meet up with my two lovely daughters, Lisa left and Natasha right. We like to go to Wapping as I used to live and work there and it's nostalgic. In 2022 I decided to do a self portrait with both of them, now on canvas for posterity. If you have one of my paintings, why not one of the artist in print.

I painted many scenes of Wapping in London, but was always reluctant to do drawing unless asked to for a commission. Here is one of my rare drawings.

I painted this small 8 by 10 inch canvas for the late Historian and Author, Madge Darby. It recently came to light, when the landlord of the Town of Ramsgate pub seen here, showed it to me and said he was given it by Madge Darby's nephew after she died. POLICE BOAT PAINTING, THESE WERE THE POLICE BOATS USED WHEN I WAS A TAMES POLICEMAN IN THE 1980'S. THEY HAD TWIN SCREWS, WITH A TOP SPEED OF 30 KNOTS,AND A NEILSON HULL.
