Description: Paris, 1857. The publisher was tried for offenses against public morality. Six poems were ordered suppressed. Baudelaire had spent years finding beauty in what polite society agreed to ignore — decay, obsession, the city at night, the self at its worst. The title was the argument: evil is where the flowers grow. The book is still in print. The trial is a footnote.
