In 1906, Grover 'Cleve' Harrell started what was to become the Yellow Cab Company with horse-drawn carriages in Oklahoma City. Harrell's older brother, A. J. arrived, soon followed by their younger brother Marvin, and the three went into business together. In 1929, the Harrell brothers established Yellow Transit Freight Lines to serve small manufacturers for whom express rates were prohibitive. Eventually the partnership dissolved, and A. J. took control of the freight lines, which he kept small until 1952 when an ownership group bought the freight company. During this time, Yellow pioneered the concept of consolidating small shipments into trailer loads. In 1968, the company name was changed to Yellow Freight System.

Pacific Intermountain Express (P.I.E) got their start in 1927 when the Lilenquest brothers began providing freight service in Idaho, running two Model A trucks between Pocatello to Idaho Falls. The company grew steadily, but P.I.E finally took shape after procuring three other firms and consolidating them in 1940. By 1946 P.I.E had 535 employees and was growing rapidly through ongoing acquisitions in the late 1940s and 1950s. In 1954, P.I.E became the largest hauler of petroleum products in the world. Service now extended from the west coast all the way to St. Louis and Chicago. By the mid 1960s, P.I.E extended service to the east coast through more acquisitions, giving them 67 terminals in 29 states.

Be-Mac Transport Company, Inc. was founded in 1932 in St. Louis, Missouri. While other trucking companies were constantly trying to expand their operating authority, Be-Mac focused on maintaining their strong north/south Midwestern route throughout the life of the company. From their centrally located St. Louis headquarters, Be-Mac's route went as far south as Dallas, Texas, and as far north as Grand Rapids, Michigan with a number of company terminals along the way.

Silver Eagle Transport Inc. was founded in Portland, Oregon in 1930 with a focus on produce and tanker service. In the late '50s, the company got into LTL freight, which dramatically expanded their reach and took them through the '90s before closing up shop early in 2000.

Hennis Freight Lines was founded in 1933 by brothers S.A. and H.L. Hennis of Mt. Airy, North, Carolina. When the Hennis brothers sold their trucking company to Shirley Mitchell in 1946, Mitchell moved the company to Winston-Salem and began his quest to become the largest individual owned trucking company in the world... and he very well could have succeeded. Hennis grew rapidly through acquisition of other lines, but unfortunately, Mitchell’s theory on maintenance was a little short-sighted. He thought it was better to buy new equipment, rather than repair the old. This led to a lack of common parts, with little or no parts inventory, which left Hennis trucks stranded all over the system when they broke down.

Consolidated Freightways (CF), was an American multinational LTL (Less Than Truckload) freight service and logistics company founded on April 1, 1929, in Portland, Oregon, and later relocated to Vancouver, Washington. At its height, the company possessed over 350 terminals, employing more than 15,000 truck drivers, dockworkers, dispatchers and management. Consolidated Freightways was once the nation's number one long-haul trucking company and the 3rd largest-ever U.S. bankruptcy filing, ceasing business in 2002.

Associated Transport was formed during World War II when seven trucking companies joined forces despite the objections of the DOJ, who believed the merger to be anti-competitive. The merger saw Associated operating 3,500 power units over 24,000 miles of unduplicated routes from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico, with 117 terminals, making them the largest trucking company in the world between 1943 and 1976. In 1976, Associated purchased Eastern Freightways in order to gain access to its equipment and routes, but also had taken on its debt. This turned out to be a bad decision, as Associated Transport couldn't manage Eastern's debt, sending the company into bankruptcy, ending a legacy of the world's largest trucking company.

Superior Fast Freight was an early LTL carrier that started out in Irwindale, California in 1955. Superior primarily focused on the West Coast, maintaining a strong line presence between Los Angeles and Seattle for decades before being bought out in 1994.

Hussmann & Roper Freight Lines was founded in St. Louis, Missouri in 1927 as a general trucking interest. They were one of the first trucking companies to offer regular overnight service, eventually advertising themselves as 'the overnight, every night line.' Initially serving all of Missouri, and eventually all of the Midwest, by the time Hussmann & Roper was sold to a larger trucking company in 1963, they were operating multiple terminals and nationwide routes.

The roots of Certified Freight Logistics (CFL) can be traced back to 1928 when Arroyo Grande Truck Co. (AGTC) was founded in Arroyo Grande, California. With a fleet of ten trucks, AGTC specialized in getting fresh produce to market. In 1952, AGTC was purchased by Edwin Nelson, an owner operator, and his brother-in-law Edwin Taylor, an Arroyo Grande farmer. The two Edwins grew AGTC by purchasing other trucking companies, and in 1963, merged with Fitzgerald Truck Service, becoming Certified Freight Lines. 20 years later, CFL had grown to 30 trucks and five yards, all while specializing in refrigerated transportation throughout California and the West Coast. As of 2008, CFL had grown to over 150 trucks, and became Certified Freight Logistics.
