No, this is not a stuffed animal. This is a real live Polyphemus Moth! This moth is gigantic, and looks exactly like a plush toy. It’s one of my favorite moths, because I found one when I was little, sleeping on the side of a house, and made it become my friend for a day, taking it everywhere with me. I like to think the huge moth enjoyed our day together. The Polyphemus Moth has a couple cool features. Its body is basically a big round furball. And when it opens its wings, the pattern on them resembles the head of a Great Horned Owl, which it uses to startle away predators.

Giant leopard moths are nocturnal. They are distributed through North America from southern Ontario, and southern and eastern United States through New England, Mexico and down to Panama.
