You’re in Antarctica at a research base and a dog comes sprinting out of the whiteness pursued by a helicopter with a crazy Swede (actually, they’re Norwegian, Mac) taking shots at it from a high-powered rifle. What do you do? Do you try to understand what the crazy Swede is doing trying to kill this dog, or do you stupidly shoot the frantic foreigner in the head and give the mutt a friendly pat? If you answered to the latter, well, bad luck – because you’re about to be “assimilated” by an alien life form. Should have learnt to speak Swedish (I mean, Norwegian…)

Campbell Jr. novella Who Goes There?, it tells the story of a group of American researchers in Antarctica who encounter the eponymous "Thing", a parasitic extraterrestrial life-form that assimilates, then imitates, other organisms. The Thing is a 1982 American science fiction horror film directed by John Carpenter and written by Bill Lancaster. Based on the 1938 John W. Campbell Jr. novella Who Goes There?, it tells the story of a group of American researchers in Antarctica who encounter the eponymous "Thing", a parasitic extraterrestrial life-form that assimilates, then imitates other organisms. The group is overcome by paranoia and conflict as they learn that they can no longer trust each other and that any one of them could be the Thing.

The gang's all here. Celebrate the most tragic chapter in Antarctic Scientific Research history with this commemorative group photo of the team from Outpost 31, all of whom mysteriously disappeared in the winter of 1982, leaving but one survivor, a plucky husky/wolf cross called 'Jed'. Jed was of course famously adopted by then US President Ronald Reagan, who brought him to live at the White House from that point on. Alien conspiracy theories attached to a dramatic shift in White House policy shortly thereafter coinciding with Jed's sudden disappearance are completely untrue. Completely.

We all know that RJ MacReady survived at the end of The Thing and he went on to create his own exterminating company to take care of any future Thing problems

The fictional base in Antarctica where humans fight an awakened alien that crashed into the ice and is now attacking outpost #31. The inhabitants fight to destroy the alien before it can escape.
