Gloucester Docks Number of views as of 18th June 2017 = 300. Founded in AD 97 by the Romans, the city of Gloucester (Gloucestershire, England) has long been an important commercial centre and port. Linked to the Severn estuary by the Gloucester and Sharpness canal, the port was strategically important due to its proximity to Birmingham, less than 50 miles away to the north. The many warehouses lining the quayside (including Biddle and Shipton shown here) date from the port's heyday in the 19th century. They were mainly built for the storage and processing of imported wheat, barley, oats, maize, linseed and cotton seed. Most have now been restored and converted for office and residential use.
