Looking over the treetops to the magnificent fortress and palace of the Alhambra. High above the city of Granada, it commands views of the Andalucian countryside of southern Spain. Building by the Moorish rulers began in 1238 on a rocky outcrop of the Sierra Nevada. Later it was to become the home of King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella and their daughter Katherine of Aragon - soon to be the wife of Arthur Tudor and then King Henry VIII following Arthur's death. Looking over the treetops to the imposing buildings of the Alhambra Palace in Granada, in Andalucia, Spain. Both a fortress and a palace, (the name means 'The Red One'), it was founded by Spain's Islamic rulers in 1238 and shows magnificent examples of medieval Moorish architecture. When Spain again became Christian, it was chosen as the palace of the Spanish rulers - Ferdinand and Isabella. Here Catherine of Aragon, future Queen of England grew up. This lovely courtyard, Lindaraja, forms part of the Nazarine Palace in the Alhambra, Granada, Spain. It is the first of a series of paintings of Granada in the Autumn which I am working on at the moment.

It is not only the views of the Alhambra from the top of Cuesta Victoria which make this a delightful scene to paint. Looking over Granada to the distant mountains from the gardens of the Alhambra Palace in Spain. The Moorish Alhambra or "Red Castle" originates from the 9th century and apparently became a royal palace in the 13th century. It passed into Christian hands when King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella conquered Granada in 1492. This was the home of the young Katherine of Aragon before her marriage to Prince Arthur of England and subsequently Prince Henry (later Henry VIII) following Arthur's death.

This watercolor painting is from the garden of the Mezquita, in the Albaicin, Granada, Spain looking out to the Alhambra Palace and the mountains of the Sierra Nevada. I have focussed here on capturing the Alhambra with the snow capped peaks of the Sierra Nevada behind. A view finished as a pastel painting of the gardens below the walls of the Alhambra Palace in Grenada, Andalucia, Spain. It's early April and the fresh green growth complements the warm red stone of the walls. In the background is the church of San Pedro and San Pablo dating from 1559-67.

This is one of my favourite views to paint in Granada. The Calle Victoria leads up from the Rio Darro into the old Moorish quarter, the Albaicin. The Patio de la Acequia is a water garden courtyard in the Palacio de Generalife, Granada, Spain. This was the summer palace and country estate of the Nasrid Emirs of Granada during the Moorish occupation. The Palace and gardens were built at the beginning of the 14th Century. Situated above the Alhambra Palace and fortifications the former rulers came to these gardens to relax. They are now a UNESCO world heritage site. The gardens with their ponds, fountains, flowerbeds and the beautiful buildings make a wonderful subject for watercolor painting. The narrow alleys of the Albaicín in the old city of Granada, Andalucia, Spain offer spectacular views across to the Alhambra on the opposite hillside. Cuesta Chapiz, runs down to the Rio Darro from the top of the old city of Granada. It divides the historic quarters, the Albaicin on the right from Sacromonte on the left and looks across to the Alhambra on the opposite hill. An alley in the Albaicin, Granada. I have always been inspired to paint the old quarters of Granada, the Albaicin, Sacromonte and the Alhambra. Spring and Autumn are the best times to visit the city but, because of Covid and lockdowns we have been unable to go to Granada for two years until this month. This painting of one of the narrow, cobbled streets of the Albaicin looking across to the Alhambra is the first in a new series of watercolours I hope to paint of this beautiful city. Water is an ever present feature of the beautiful gardens of the Generalife, the summer palace of the Moorish sultans of Granada. Ponds and fountains are everywhere. The water spraying on hot stones tends to cool the air in summer. This is the second of my Autumn in Granada paintings of this year.
