The landscape of Wales is dotted with Castles, times of Majesty, mystery and bravery! The Welsh Prince Llywelyn Ap Iorweth a.k.a. Llewelyn the Great built Dolbadarn before the creation of Caernarfon Castle in the 13th Century. In 1284 Dolbadarn was taken - by arch enemy of Llewelyn, Edward the first, who removed some of its timbers - to build his new castle at Caernarfon. Within the framework of Welsh thinking ~ I am sure that this was the upmost insult..! Dolbadarn still remains to this very day as one of Wales most iconic and small fortress like Castles... In the early part of the 13th century, Philip II of France made Saumur part of his royal domain. The page for September in the Tres Riches Heures du Duc de Berry depicts the Chateau as it looked in 1410. It changed hands several times until 1589 when the Protestant King Henry IV (of France and Navarre) gave the castle to Duplessis-Mornay. In 1621 the castle was converted into an army barracks. Nearly two centuries later it was converted into a state prison under Napoleon Bonaparte. In the first part of the 20th century, the city of Saumur acquired the castle and began a restoration program to house the museum of the decorative arts. Ruins of Dobele medieval castle built in 1335 by the Livonian order on the abandoned semigallian timber hillfort. Town of Dobele is located in the historical region of Zemgale in Latvia. The Livonian Order's stone castle is the oldest building in Dobele, and a national scale architectural monument. The castle was lived in until 1730, when it was abandoned and gradually fell in ruins. Works for the conservation of the ruins started in 2002.

Looking over the moat to Caerphilly Castle (Castell Caerffili in Welsh) situated in the centre of the County Borough of Caerphilly, South Wales. The image was captured during a late September afternoon after heavy rain showers. Built in the late 13th century by Gilbert de Clare in order to secure this part of Wales from being taken over by the Welsh leader Llewellyn, building was begun in 1268 and it was immediately attacked! Building was then recommenced in 1271 and now It is the largest castle in ground area in Wales! Its surrounding moat and lakes these days are a haven for wildlife rather than for defence!
