This design originally came from an engraving by Hendrick Goltzius in 1588, which I have restored, redrawn, and digitized. The text reads: "NON AMBIRE PROBAT SAPIENS, SED LAVDAT HONORES, LAVDA CONTINGANT SI TAMEN ILLA PROBIS. SIC PHAETONTAEVS NIMIVM TEMERARIA LAPSVS VOTA DOCET TANDEN FINE CARERE BONO." Which roughly translates to: "The wise man demonstrates that he does not search for but appreciates the honors. And recognizes if happens to honest. Remember the reason for the season

Demeter was the great Olympian Goddess of agriculture, grain, and bread. She also presided over the foremost of the Mystery Cults in the Ancient World, which promised its followers the path to a blessed afterlife. Demeter was depicted as a mother, often crowned and holding sheafs of wheat and/or a torch. She was known as Ceres to the Romans.

Much like her Greek counterpart in Artemis, Diana was the Roman Goddess of wild animals, the hunt, young girls, and childbirth. Unlike Artemis, however, Diana was also a moon Goddess, connected with Luna in the same vein as her brother, Apollo, and his later connection to the sun. This is a classical rendition of 'Diana the Huntress', originally sculpted by Guillaume Coustou (1716-1777).

Minerva is her Roman counterpart. She was was a companion to many of the great heroes in Greek legend. She was also the patroness and protector of Athens. A perpetual virgin, she never married. The owl was her symbol, featured in this design with the Greek word for wisdom.

Many of Rome's important religious institutions are attributed to Numa Pompilius, including the Roman Calendar, Vestal Virgins, the cult of Mars, Jupiter, Romulus and the office of Pontifex Maximus, the Roman high priest.
