Antarctic Continent Hoodies

The mountains of the Transantarctic Range, Glaciers and spectacular pressure ridges in the sea ice at Cape Hallett, Ross Sea, Antarctica. The ice is turned blue by the angle of the sun reflecting off the compressed ice. This colouring occurred for just a short while. Adelie Procession (#1 in a Sequence) showing a group of Adelie Penguins (pygoscelis adeliae) gathering together to cross a frozen pool in the pressure ridges in the sea ice at Cape Hallett, Ross Sea, Antarctica. Because this frozen pool was different from the regular environment they were very diffident about crossing it. It was as if they thought it was open water, rather than frozen, and that the risk of a Leopard Seal may have been present. Adelie Penguins (pygoscelis adeliae) off the main Penguin Highway at Cape Hallett, Ross Sea, Antarctica. These little guys were out on their own having left the colony to go fishing. They had a 3-4 Kilometre walk to get to the edge of the fast ice. Perhaps they were just enjoying the scenery which included multiple galciers slowly sliding down the valleys of the Trans Antarctic Range to the sea. Although massive effects of Global Warming have not yet hit the Antarctic, there are signs with more and larger icebergs calving from the ice shelves, and Gentoo Penguins moving further south to breed. The continent of Antarctica was discovered 200 years ago. It was the last region on Earth in recorded history to be discovered. This commemorative design celebrates that discovery. Sometimes called "the international continent", it is currently home to 70 research stations, representing 29 countries. The design will appeal to geologists, oceanographers, physicists, astronomers, glaciologists, and meteorologists.

Close to shore huge tabular icebergs are stuck in the fast ice. These icebergs are about the size of a ten story building above the fast ice and about 6 to 7 times that below. They are new icebergs having just calved from claciers or ice tongues in the previous summer and have got iced in during the winter. As the summer develops the fast ice will at least partially melt and the icebergs will be set free to travel around the Antarctic Continent until they eventually melt.
