The old stone arched bridge that connects the 2 neighborhoods of Vovousa village one of the most remote villages of East Zagori region, Ioannina, Epirus, Greece. The river below is Aoos river, one of the best rivers for rafting in Greece. Vovousa village, is an excellent "gate" to the National Park of Valia Calda.

Camera: Canon EOS 1Ds Mark III This one is Pyli bridge, located about 1,5 km after Pyli town right beside the road that goes from Pyli to Elati. It was constructed on 1514 by St. Vissarion and connects the banks of Portaikos river and two mountains, Itamos and Koziakas. It is 20 km far from Trikala city and until 1936 it was the only passage between the mountainous villages of Aspropotamos region and the plains of Trikala. Its arch has a width of 28,20 m., its height is 13,30 m and its total length is 65 m.

You can find this bridge (Kleidonia bridge) very close to the road that goes from Ioannina to Konitsa (Epirus region, Greece), about 17 km before you reach Konitsa. It is located at the exit of the magnificent Vikos Gorge, where the plains of Kleidonia start, at a "crossover" landscape and it was constructed in 1853. Responsible for the construction of the bridge was Balkiz Hanum, wife (?) of Malik Pasha, who gathered 37.000 grossia, and took all the expences. The river that flows below is Voidomatis. This one is Paleokaria bridge (Trikala, Thessaly, Greece), one of the less known but one of the most beautiful old Greek, stone, arched bridges. Connects the two banks of Portaikos river. Its arch has a width of 18,60 m. Its height is 10,30 m and its total length 26,50 m. According to local oral tradition it was constructed in the 15th century. No written data. There must be about 40 or 45 of those old stone bridges, that I love so much, around Pelion mountain. One of the oldest, is the one in the photo, very close to Tsagarada village, which was constructed in 1787

Among the dozens of old stone bridges of Greece, (one of my very favourite subjects), this one, the legendary bridge of Arta , crossing river Arachthos, is the most famous. Connected with legends, fairy tales and folk ballads, it seems that for a long time, the contruction of this bridge was the "Epic of failure". Some lyrics from a folk ballad, just to get the idea: "Masters forty five and apprentices sixty a bridge they were building at the river of Arta once All day they built it, and in the evening it collapsed." . The solution was to sacrifice the headmaster's wife, who, according to the legend and the song, was "built in" or "walled up" (immurement) in the bridge!!!
