Keith Black was an American producer of high-performance drag racing engines. Black first made a name for himself in the mid-1940s in boat racing when he set a world record in his second time out at the Salton Sea running one of his first performance engines. He opened Keith Black Racing Engines in 1959 and by 1961 his boat racing exploits included nearly 50 international and national records. Drag racing teams took notice and Black’s builds for the drag strip became one of the winningest engines in the NHRA in the ’60s and his aluminum engine blocks would dominate the market throughout the ’70s. The engines Keith Black produced were based on the Chrysler 426 Hemi, Chevy Big Block, and Oldsmobile Big Block designs.

In 1982's Six Pack, Kenny Rogers plays Brewster (Brew) Baker, an itinerant racing-car driver. Notwithstanding Brew's nickname, the six pack of the title refers to cute kids, not to beers. Cute kids who are orphans, whose specialties are either stripping or repairing racing cars, depending on how they feel about the owner. The kids steal Brew's engine when the film begins, but pretty soon he becomes a father figure to them and they fall into working as his pit crew. It's about as '80s as they come and super family friendly, but a good watch nonetheless.

In 1923, George Wight opened an auto parts yard on Gage Avenue in Bell, California. The shop was a combination of salvage yard and machine shop, and it catered to the race crowd in the early days of dry lakes racing. George began removing speed equipment from the junkers he bought. George sold the speed equipment separately under what eventually became Bell Auto Parts. Bell Auto Parts is one of the first, if not the first, speed shop in the United States and it didn't take long before it was the center of racing and rodding activities for the greater Los Angeles area.

By the '50s, drag racing was becoming more organized, largely due to the efforts of the American Hot Rod Association. Dirt fields sprouted bleachers and concession stands, and then beautiful paved tracks with safety fences and elaborate pit areas as drag racing became big business. Being a racing-crazy state, Indiana was not immune to this, and so a famous track was born in 1954 in Hobart, Indiana, just east of I-65 on the north side of US 30. For tourism purposes and making it easier for folks to find, the track was said to be in the much larger city of Gary, Indiana which was just a few miles north of Hobart. The track became a favorite for fans and drivers alike and quickly became known as the place "where the great ones run."

Gambler Chassis Co. designed what would become one of the most popular new outlaw sprint racing chassis designs in decades in 1980. The chassis thoughtfully laid out to be both extremely rigid and modular for repair work or even customization. The success of the Gambler-based cars led to countless copycats and many of the original design features are now standard among modern chassis builders. While Gambler built sprint cars are long out of production, most of those they made are still tearing up the track and are hardly sought after by racers, so when one comes up for sale, it's safe to say that it doesn't stay on the market for very long.

The Dr. Oldsmobile theme was one of Oldsmobile's most successful marketing campaigns in the early '70s, it involved fictional characters created to promote the wildly popular 442 muscle car. 'Dr. Oldsmobile' was a tall lean professor type who wore a white lab coat. His assistants included 'Elephant Engine Ernie' who represented the big block 455 Rocket engine. 'Shifty Sidney' was a character who could be seen swiftly shifting his hand using a Hurst shifter. 'Wind Tunnel Waldo' had slicked back hair that appeared to be constantly wind blown. He represented Oldsmobile's wind tunnel testing, that produced some of the sleekest designs of the day. Another character included 'Hy Spy' who had his ear to the ground as he spied on the competition.

Perfect Products began forming fiberglass hoods, scoops, and body panels in the early '60s as a white label supplier to other companies. By the late '60s, they had had started advertising direct sales in the various hot rod and drag racing magazines, selling via mail order though their catalog. Whether you needed a bolt on hood scoop or a one piece front clip, Akron, Ohio's Perfect Products was the best in the business.

The 1969 Hurst/Olds again used the 455-cid V-8 with W-30 heads, cam, distributor, and Force-Air induction. This engine, called the W-46, was slightly detuned from '68, losing 10 bhp. A H/O modified Turbo Hydra-matic transmission with console-shifted Hurst Dual-Gate was mandatory. As high performance raced into the wacky late '60s, the idea of a mad scientist conjuring up ever-more-potent 4-4-2s seemed almost reasonable, and Olds advertising was rife with the image of Dr. Oldsmobile in his baggy lab coat and silent-movie mustache. In a sense, there really was such a fellow: Jack "Doc" Watson, head of research for Hurst Performance Products.

The Aurora Plastics Corporation introduced the A/FX (Aurora Factory Experimentals, later simply "AFX") line of slot cars, track sets, and related accessories in 1971. Aurora designed the AFX cars with an interchangeable car body, allowing users to use a single chassis for multiple models. The original '71 A/FX chassis utilized an updated version of Aurora's "Thunderjet 500" line, popular in the '60s. AFX introduced the innovative "G-Plus" in-line motor chassis in 1976. This design allowed the use of narrow, open-wheel Formula 1 style bodies, something not previously possible with traditional slot car chassis designs. AFX continued production, releasing multiple innovative products until the company was forced into receivership in 1983.

If you grew up riding motorcycles in Southern California in the 1970s and ’80s, you probably remember Indian Dunes. “The Dunes,” as it was known to regulars, was a motorcycle off-road playground located in Valencia, that opened up in 1970 out on Highway 126 in what at the time seemed like the boonies. The 600-acre park had a larger purpose which was to play host to Hollywood studios as a versatile backdrop for all kinds of film and television projects, including what would be the Dukes of Hazzard's most death-defying jump of all time. Of course, most folks remember it as the place to head out with your buddies to ride dirt bikes and dune buggies, or even to take in organized motocross racing events.

Speed Racer came out in 1967. The Mach 5 is the iconic vehicle all the kids wanted to drive and Speed Racer is the coolest and of course he has the checkered flag, unless Trixie is in the race then she grabs the checkered flag!
