Mention a racetrack that operated in Brooklyn for more than 55 years, and people will think you're crazy, but they're clearly just not in the know. Buzz-a-Rama was a slot car racing venue that was opened in 1965 by Buzz and Dolores Perri that had multiple electrified racing tracks, vintage arcade games, and dusty glass displays selling slot-car racing parts. The hobby was extremely popular in the '60s, with dozens of similar raceways in the city, but Buzz-A-Rama was the last commercial slot-car track in operation in NYC. While other tracks had died out decades ago, Buzz kept his open, even though it made no money, saying that if he didn't own the building, it would have been long gone as well.

When you think of Sonoma, California, road racing is probably one of the last things on the list, but that all changed in when two friends conceived the idea of a racetrack while on a hunting trip in the southern Sonoma Mountains in 1967. Located at Sears Point in Sonoma County, California, the original 2.520 mile road racing course was constructed on 720 acres and opened on December 1, 1968, with the hosting SCCA Enduro. Featuring 12 turns on a hilly course with 160 ft. of total elevation change, the track is still considered one of America's greatest road racing tracks. The track was renamed Golden State International Raceway, and saw a couple more name changes decades later, but is still in operation today as the Sonoma Raceway.

Tom Hoover, whose work at Chrysler included development of the legendary Max Wedge and 426 Hemi V-8 engines, the 1970 Plymouth AAR ’Cuda, and the 1978 Dodge Li’l Red Express truck, is best known as the “Father of the Hemi.” Hoover trained as a physicist at Juniata College in his hometown of Huntingdon, Pennsylvania. He received his master’s degree from Penn State and later earned a master’s degree in automotive engineering from the University of Michigan while working for Chrysler. Tom led the team that designed the mighty 426 Hemi that was so powerful and so successful, that it lead to NASCAR changing their rules to attempt to eliminate it from competition. PRX Racing Oil was one of many Penn Drake branded petroleum products produced by the Pennsylvania Refining Company from the mid-'40s through the late '60s. Penn Drake takes its name from the Drake Well in Pennsylvania, a 69'-foot-deep oil well in Cherrytree Township, Venango County, the success of which sparked the first oil boom in the United States. Drilled by Edwin Drake in 1859 along the banks of Oil Creek, it is the first commercial oil well in the United States and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places and designated a National Historic Landmark in 1966. The well is the centerpiece of the Drake Well Museum located 3 miles south of Titusville. ​

In 1940, the owners of Seattle’s Playland Amusement Park decided to build a racetrack where they could host various motorsports events. Calling it Aurora Stadium Speedway, the new 1/4 mile dirt track opened in 1941 and quickly became a popular attraction. Aurora hosted hot rod races one night and midgets on another night, usually Fridays and Saturdays, but as America entered WWII, racing was put on hold at the end of '41. The end of the war saw the boys come home, and racing resumed in '46. Soon, the track would get paved and stock cars were added to the mix. As Seattle's population grew into the once rural area, noise complaints by neighbors coupled with the slow decline of the amusement park led to the track was closing down in '58.

During WWII, auto racing shut down as rationing of everything from fuel and rubber to metals made it near impossible, plus, most drivers, crew, and spectators were all taking part in the war effort. As the war wound down and the boys started coming home, Los Angeles racing promoter Bill White approached the city about paving a quarter-mile track in the L.A. Coliseum and hosting midget races. The city loved the idea, and green flagged paving right over the athletic track. The result was a flat track with inside pits. White formed the United Racing Association (URA) for the midget racers, and they got back to racing in 1945. They ran two races the first year, averaging 36,000 people a night, and the next year they ran 15 events.
