The Salt Water Crocodile is commonly known in Brunei Borneo as Buaya Katak. As we cruised around a river bank on one of the kampong water boats ~ we found this fine specimen 'mouth agape' basking in the sun... Although crocs often display their teeth as a form of threat ~ in this instance ~ during hot tropical afternoons ~ it is a way to 'regulate their body temperature' ~ almost like dogs do whilst 'panting'. 'Salties' as the Aussies often call them grow big in size and rare sightings have been reported of up to 9 metres body length. In fact whilst on a boat trip to Marudi on the baram river (Sarawak) some years ago ~ we saw an enormous crocodile ~ luckily from the comforts of our high speed ferry! This one was just a juv...

Taken on one of my Top End Photography Tours, at Yellow Waters in Kakadu National Park. There is nothing like seeing a big croc up close to let you know you are in wild territory...and they are great at smiling for the camera!
