The gentoo penguin (JEN-too) (Pygoscelis papua) is a penguin species in the genus Pygoscelis, most closely related to the Adélie penguin (P. adeliae) and the chinstrap penguin (P. antarcticus). The earliest scientific description was made in 1781 by Johann Reinhold Forster with a type locality in the Falkland Islands. They call in a variety of ways, but the most frequently heard is a loud trumpeting which the bird emits with its head thrown back.

A gentoo penguin, one of thousands in Antartica, out for a walk on a fine summer's day a few years ago when I visited the continent. Many people love these birds because they look all dressed up and formal, but in actuality, they can be quite nasty and territorial! They are also natural klutzes!

These adults have left their nests & are heading for the sea to go fishing to feed their chicks. Gentoos breed on many sub-Antarctic islands. The main colonies are on the Falkland Islands, South Georgia, Kerguelen Islands, Macquarie Island, Heard Islands, South Shetland Islands & the Antarctic Peninsula. Gentoo Penguins use rocks to build their nests. These rocks are fiercly defended throughout the breeding season, as neighboring penguins will attempt to steal rocks for their own nests.
