Godafoss Waterfall, Iceland

Story goes that this is the place, where Icelandic Chief threw away all of his statues of Nordic Gods after converting to Christianity.

The aurora dances above the spectacular Goðafoss in northern Iceland.

The big, famous one is Godafoss, but as so often seemed to be the case, there was a smaller, less well known waterfall nearby which was also quite impressive. This was it - just downstream from Godafoss waterfall.

Godafoss Waterfall is probably the most well known and popular tourist attraction in Iceland. This, different to the usual, image shows the waterfall close up and shows the power of the water from the river Skjálfandafljótas as it falls the 12 meters over the falls. The aurora dancing across the sky above the famous Godafoss in northern Iceland. I loved how it managed to defy the clouds trying to move in and hide it, since it meant hours more aurora watching for me!

The sky lights up in pink over the massive Goðafoss waterfall in northern Iceland. I couldn't have asked for a better 18hrs here -- a sunset, northern lights all night, and then blue skies the next day!

There is no doubt in my mind as to why Icelanders dubbed this waterfall Goðafoss, or "the waterfall of the gods." This was certainly a great way to spend a Friday evening and was one of the most memorable aurora displays I've seen to date! I also felt like it was quite an accomplishment to even get a night shot at ground level of Goðafoss. The spray here was so heavy that my gear was literally dripping afterwards, so trying to get a shot that wasn't obscured by spray on the lens was not easy!

The massive falls of Goðafoss in Iceland's north. This had to be one of my favourite waterfalls in Iceland, partially because it had so many different viewpoints and partially because I got to watch the northern lights dance over it for hours the night before! This lookout was definitely the most difficult to get to, requiring a precarious jump across wobbly rocks just upstream from the falls. Initially I decided not to try it, but after a tour bus arrived and a number of people crossed safely, I got up the nerve and managed to get across successfully. Glad I did!
