Seen from the water, the imposing Punta della Dogana in Venice, Italy. This classical building sits between the Grand Canal and the Giudecca canal at the tip of an island which is diagonally opposite St Mark's Square. It was used for docking and as a customs house. However, the building as we see it now dates from 1682. Its use as a customs house lasted until the 1980s. Restoration took place in 2008-9 and this beautiful building is now an art museum.

The sun is gradually setting over Venice. Here we see on the left the island of San Giorgio Maggiore with the campanile of its magnificent Palladian church which dates from 1566 and the subject for many artists including Monet. It is now the HQ of the Cini Foundation Arts Centre with a noted library. Further on we can see the distinctive domes of the Basilica of Santa Maria della Salute. Here the Giudecca Canal, the Grand Canal and the Canale de San Marco meet in the Venetian Lagoon.

The imposing Basilica of Santa Maria della Salute in Venice. This beautiful building stands on the Punta della Dogana between the Grand Canal and the Giudecca Canal and is obliquely opposite St Mark's Square. This view is from the Grand Canal. It was consecrated in 1681 and was built as an offering for the deliverance of Venice from a plague that ravished the city in 1630. Its domes became an emblem of the city andit has been painted by artists such as Canaletto and Turner.

The Hai River, formerly known as the Peiho or Pei Ho, is a Chinese river connecting Beijing to Tianjin and the Bohai Sea. The Hai River at Tianjin is formed by the confluence of five rivers, the Southern Canal, Ziya River, Daqing River, Yongding River, and the Northern Canal. The southern and northern canals are parts of the Grand Canal. The Southern Canal is joined by the Wei River at Linqing. The Northern Canal joins with the Bai He (or Chaobai River) at Tongzhou. I was in Venice last year and was blown away by the city and the canals. There is an image waiting to be taken at every turn and the church at the mouth of the Grand Canal is one of the most imposing buildings in the city. I managed to get a gondolier in the picture as well and I have given the image a watercolour effect in Photoshop CC and Topaz.

Looking towards the Grand Canal and Santa Maria Della Cathedral in the early morning in Venice, Italy. A bit of history on the cathedral .... In 1630, Venice experienced an unusually devastating outbreak of the plague. As a votive offering for the city's deliverance from the pestilence, the Republic of Venice vowed to build and dedicate a church to Our Lady of Health (or of Deliverance, Italian: Salute). The church was designed in the then fashionable baroque style by Baldassare Longhena, who studied under the architect Vincenzo Scamozzi. Construction began in 1631. Most of the objects of art housed in the church bear references to the Black Death.

The Gallery of Maps in the Vatican Museums holds maps which were commissioned between 1578 and 1580 to show the regions of Italy and territories of the church. The maps are based on the work of Ignazio Danti, a 16th century Italian priest, mathematician, astronomer and cosmographer, and are an important record of 16th century geography.
