Antelope Island State Park is for anyone who loves hiking, camping, bison, trail running, wildlife, and mountains in the Great Salt Lake, Utah. Great for a camper, hiker, trail runner to see an American Bison herd, some people call them buffalo.

Simple Elegance by Debra Martz Being near the water from just before dawn to 30 minutes after sunrise presented me with some of the most beautiful moments with the egrets I had ever seen. I watched as they skillfully hunted with new movements/techniques I had not witnessed until this particular morning. Those moves often showed me just how poised and graceful these Snowy Egrets can be! Tree of Vultures by Debra Martz It was the end of September and fall migration was in full swing. I go to the Great Salt Plains State Park quite often for bird watching and I've taken some photos of birds in this old, neatly shaped dead tree in the past. But this was the first time I had seen it outlined with the migrating Turkey Vultures. Antelope Island State Park in Great Salt Lake is home to free-ranging bison, mule deer, big horn sheep and prong horn antelope.

Posing Turkey Vulture by Debra Martz There is a sidewalk and stairs along each level of the spillway that I walk while bird watching. Rarely are there birds on the railings with the exception of the Turkey Vultures especially during fall migration. There were 4 here together but 3 flew immediately upon seeing me. This one, howeve, decided to just hold its own spot which allowed me a few closeup up photos. Early Morning Arrival of Egrets by Debra Martz It's that time of year; fall migration of birds passing through northern Oklahoma. Camping at the River Road campground at the Great Salt Plains State Park is a great place to watch the birds as they start moving in early in the morning. Nescatunga Chimney Fireplace With Decorated Mantle by Debra Martz Nescatunga is a small, unincorporated town in Oklahoma that is adjacent to the Great Salt Plains State Park. I drive the narrow road between the two when out bird watching and that was when I noticed an older home had been torn down. I thought it was very cool that they left the fireplace and chimney with a decorated mantle! Early Morning American White Pelicans in Black and White by Debra Martz I love fall migration in northern Oklahoma. The American White Pelicans, Cormorants, Seagulls of several varieties arrive in large numbers as a resting area for a few weeks as they fish the waters of the lake, river and at the spillway. Splash of a Landing by Debra Martz It is fun to watch Cormorants land and take off from water. They always make several splashes when landing and even more on take-off as they sort of get a running start. This was on take-off which I thought was cool with the circular splash made by this Double-crested Cormorant. Captured at the spillway of the Great Salt Plains Lake in northern Oklahoma. I found it rather odd to see this Double-crested Cormorant drying its wings while in the flowing water over the spillway. More commonly, this would be done on a rock, dock, shoreline or such. But this one seemed perfectly content in this location for wing drying. High winds churn up the dirts of the shallow lake bottom and even brought some heavy streaking flowing over from the upper tier of the spillway. Gull Going for the Fish by Debra Martz The Gulls were being fairly good at catching fish on this day though most they caught were small. Ice Bank on the Lake by Debra Martz After some severe cold weather in January, we finally had some days of south winds which brought some much wanted warmth. Which meant, time out of the house! So naturally, we headed to the state park only 45 miles away from home. One area of the lake was completely devoid of ice remains and that was where we saw large numbers of Pelicans and Gulls. Along the spillway of the lake is a great place to watch birds flying. The are constantly coming and going and feeding. This Ring-billed Gull was happy just gliding around in circles and getting closer to me on each round. I thought all but the few resident pelicans had moved on south but on this January day there were many more than the normal count. This is just another small section of the line of pelicans that were fishing together. Unlike many birds that are territorial, these Pelicans work together herding fish into shallow waters where they dip their head under, scoop, then raise their heads and gulp down the catch. Mine Mine Mine by Debra Martz When I saw this action by the seagulls, the movie Nemo came to mind! I'll never forget the Pelican and Seagull scene where the seagulls were calling out MINE in an animated attempt to get Dory and Marlin at the dock! I thought, "that sounds just like the seagulls at the beach when the tourist throw up food for them!" Mine! Mine! Mine! And that poor, single Cormorant that has just surfaced under the wing of one seagull must be wondering, "what's happening!!??!!" We enjoy going to the Great Salt Plains State Park and staying a week or two in our RV. We prefer the campground that is right on the water's edge which is great for sunrises and also many birds come and go all the day long. Kayaking to the Spillway by Debra Martz If you read my descriptions on my bird photography, you might recall my mention of the spillway as the location. It is one of my favorite places to bird watch in this state park. But after the birds do their morning feedings and preening in the water, they all but disappear until evening. I only see one lone seagull in this image myself. Just like the birds possibly, I was back to my comfortable place taking a break just after high noon. I had a quick lunch then went back outside and saw this couple kayaking so went back in the RV for the camera.
