ON this desing inspired by a 7th century BC Greek vase, a warrior (the Greek god Apollo ?) wearing a helmet with a high crest, armed with a lance and protected by a shield wearing Medusa's head fights a serpent wound around a column while another snake sneaks in. Two birds observe the scene while another one flies behind the warrior.

On the 4th century BC Sophilos Dinos, the artist painted the procession of Olympian gods on their way to the wedding of Thetys & Pelleus, parents of Achilles. Here Ares & Aphrodite (Mars & Venus in Rome) are riding their horse cart while the 3 Morai walk beside them.

Run rabbit run! A skyphos is a two-handled deep wine-cup on a low flanged base. This one is decorated with running hares chased by hounds with a motif of bones, does not contain any wine, just thorns and a general atmosphere of menace.

The death of Sarpedon, son of Zeus and Laodamia, occurred during the Trojan war. Here the god Hermes directs Hypnos and Thanatos, personifications of Sleep and Death to carry the away the body of the hero to be buried in his homeland. I reproduced this design from a vase painted and signed by Euphrosios around 550 BC in Athens.

This design features an iconic ancient Greek pottery motif between a hoplite and Persian warrior along with some of the most important and famous battles of the Greco-Persian Wars that lasted from 499 - 449 BC between the ancient Greek City-States and the Achaemenid Persian Empire. These battles include MARATHON - THERMOPYLAE - ARTEMISIUM - SALAMIS - PLATAEA - MYCALE - EURYMEDON - LADE - CYPRUS - SARDIS. In Greek mythology, the maenads were female followers of Dionysus and the most significant members of the Thiasus, the god's retinue. Their name literally translates as "raving ones". Maenads were known as Bacchantes by the Romans. They are often portrayed in a state of ecstatic frenzy brought by a combination of dancing and intoxication. During these rites, they would carry a thyrsus, a long stick wrapped in ivy or vine leaves and tipped with a pine cone. They would weave ivy-wreaths around their heads and often handle or wear snakes.

In Greek mythology, maenads were the female followers and worshipers of Dionysus and the most significant members of its retinue. I created this design out of a 4th Century BC red figure Greek vase from Etruria.
