Guarding the Light ©Debra Martz I couldn't believe this Brown Pelican was perched up high on this street light. I was in the area about 4 years ago and saw one perched in the exact same place and thought it was strange at the time as I had never seen a pelican perch on something like this. I guess it did offer a good vantage point as it was right by the boat ramp at Goose Island State Park in Texas. It was not bothered by my presence as it stayed put while I walked around taking photos...guess it didn't want another pelican or bird to get its light. ©Debra Martz, All Rights Reserved

Hummingbirds are very territorial. I am frequently dive-bombed in the morning as I set up a camera for the day's work. This is a composite of four images of a female Allen's Hummingbird guarding her Zinnia. They were all taken on a calm and somewhat overcast October morning, within 50 minutes of each other, so the background and Zinnia were easily aligned. All the images were taken with a Pentax K-50 with a 1980's vintage, manual focus 70-210mm macro zoom, set to 150mm, f11, 1/1600s and ISO 3200 and 6400. This image has been submitted to the Los Angeles Center For Digital Art for their 2016 International Juried Digital Art and Photography Competition.

This is yet another hand pulled monoprint from my Corroboree Frog series of prints. This print was created using a number of print layers and then finer outline detail with white ink was drawn on when the print had dried. The Corroboree Frog is a critically endangered Australian male frog that is found at altitudes above 1000metres above sea level. The male frog builds nest chambers in damp mossy areas and guards the eggs. There are only two species of Corroborree frogs, the northern and southern, and they live in the alpine areas. The Southern Corroborree frog is now found only in a 10 square kilometre section of the the Kosciuszko National Park in Australia’s Snowy Mountains area, the northern Corroborree frog inhabits an area of...

Around the base of the central prang (spire) at Wat Arun in Bangkok, Thailand, are perhaps fifty, maybe more, of these porcelain encrusted soldiers. The patterning on the prang is made up layers with the soldiers as one of those layers. who then appear to be holding up the next layer. While each soldier appears the same as its neighbour, there are subtle differences from one to the other. The prang is a remarkable testament to the power of faith and stunning to behold.

One of the most visited places in Bangkok is the Wat Arun temple complex, of which the central and four smaller prangs there are perhaps the most visually extraordinary structures. The prangs are encrusted with brightly coloured porcelain fragments and seashells, all arranged in the most intricate patterns. This image, captured on a wonderfully clear, cloudless day, is of one of the four smaller prangs, and shows two of the four horsemen that adorn its sides, sitting in portals, which appear to be guarding the prang.

The antique watercolor or oil drawing style is the inspiration for these antique Japan type designs.
