The Harpies, which means rapturous, were creatures represented either as beautiful and seductive women with long nails, or as terrible monsters with the body of a bird of prey, a woman's face and breasts. They kidnapped the bodies of the dead to enjoy their love, so they were represented in the tombs as if they were waiting for the dead, especially the young to snatch them. They were cruel and violent, being related to destructive winds, cyclones and storms. Harpies are creatures from Greek mythology, often represented as birds of prey with a woman's face and breasts. In Jason's story, harpies were sent to punish the blind Thracian king Phineus by stealing his food at every meal.

The harpy eagle is a neotropical species of eagle. In order to distinguish it from its similar looking cousin, it is often referred to as the American harpy eagle. It is the largest and most powerful raptor found throughout its range and is among the largest eagles in the world!

This drawing was part of my series of 100 animal drawings, used for the Terra Oracle Deck. All 100 animals were drawing with a black felt pen on smooth finish white paper to keep perfect line quality. Using a variety of fine tipped pens, I was able to capture the essence of each animal using layers of tight mark making and expressive markmaking, while maintaining a certain essence of simplicity.
