The hurdy-gurdy or viella a roue (wheeled violin) is a stringed instrument where the strings are vibrated by means of a wheel coated in rosin which is turned using a handle. The melody strings are stopped by pressing keys which are attached to pegs whilst unstopped drone strings provide continuous single notes. I took this idea from one of my sketchbooks based on birds on a roof with a Hurdy-Gurdy.

A hurdy gurdy is a stringed instrument which has a buzzing bridge, this gives the instrument its unusual rhythmical sound,this instrument is often coupled with bag pipes to play for dance music.

The design is based on a traditional lute back instrument and the insect designs are added for effect with the cockshafer beetle near the crank. This instrument creates a buzzing sound when played and the insects are added to reflect that idea.
