The hurdy-gurdy or viella a roue (wheeled violin) is a stringed instrument where the strings are vibrated by means of a wheel coated in rosin which is turned using a handle. The melody strings are stopped by pressing keys which are attached to pegs whilst unstopped drone strings provide continuous single notes. A red hurdy gurdy drawn in fineliner and then edited in 3D Paint. The design is based on a traditional lute back instrument and the insect designs are added for effect with the cockshafer beetle near the crank. This instrument creates a buzzing sound when played and the insects are added to reflect that idea.
