I loved the contrasts and shades, the lime green, faded, retro, pistachio pudding, cream and custard, pealing, layers of memories and decades past. There is a sadness to Paddington. Perhaps it reminds me of childhood tales of abandoned bears, a memory of a never to return family holiday to Cornwall, sitting in a first class dining car with silver coffee pots and an English breakfast. Memories of a lonely and confusing first year at college, taking a late train back to a depressing suburb. Victorian buildings, hospital wards with broken windows and dirt encrusted window sills. A little corner of London. And yet the sky is blue, hot and bright. The windows reflecting blue, shadows gathering in the street below.

Deptford is one of those places that has been on the periphery of my life, most of my life. I used to wander here from Surrey Docks in the 1980s, and it was as vibrant and diverse then as it is now. Edgy, alive, exciting. I loved the colours and textures of these shops, so I painted them. The canvas is 0.4 inches deep. It can therefore hang without the need for framing if wished.

On the corner, a pub, late summer sun creating patches of light in windows; below, as usual, the street is frenetic but above calmness reigns. The work is full of London flavours and atmosphere, rich in colour and in detail. A great gift, a wonderful souvenir of this corner of London.

A welcome break from the airlessness of the office, time to sit in the late afternoon sun. It is the home stretch, just an hour or so to go. He is unaware of his surroundings, engrossed in what he is doing. This colourful portrait makes a lovely gift, and a great addition to any collection of portrait.

London dreams

A long walk on hot streets, the smell of tar and London plain. On a corner, a pub, a play of shadow and light, of colour, blue sky and purple stucco. The bricks reflect the light, golden almost. Inside we can seek shade, refreshment, in dark shadow and cosy nooks. The work is rich in light, in gentle yet vivid colour, a wonderful souvenir of London, a great gift.

A day of freedom, a day of walking and exploring, seeking out quiet streets, forgotten it seems, but the day is early. This work depicts a café on a street corner, a gentle game of shadow and light, seeped in blue and white. A perfect souvenir of London.

A quiet magic settles over this corner of the huge city; a shop prepares to close early, yet the lights still shine brightly, time still to purchase joy, trimmings for the feast. There is snow on the ground, winter in the air, a scent of smoke. On the walls, Christmas decorations. Christmas is coming. This work is full of London charm, a permanent, year-round reminder of Christmas too, and a great gift.

A familiar corner of London, of Soho. A place of loud voices and clinking glasses, a vibe of pure energy, of socialising and Bacchanalian pleasure, of joy and youth. Beer, wine, crisps, a whiff of nicotine. It is late afternoon, on Friday, and the weekend stretches with its promise of brunches and candlelit dinners, of walks by the Thames and picnics in parks. I know the area so well. It is embedded in my psyche. This work depicts a corner pub, rich in detail, in light and shadow.

Many years ago, as a student, I used to live in Deptford. It felt exciting, new, fresh and edgy. An intensity of sights and colour, shops of bright and exotic produce, music that rattled and alternative bookshops in damp, decaying spaces that seemed full of promise. Life moved on and so did I, and one day I returned, to briefly reconnect with my old self, with times gone by, a Proustian moment of bitter sweetness. This work depicts a row of shops, simple and full of character. The work is a great souvenir of London.

Charlie Big Potatoes is a Cockney saying meaning someone who thinks they are great, a big man, a diamond geezer of London Town. The cockneys understand it, maybe a great gift for a Londoner or someone who loves London or Britain.
