The Kennet and Avon Canal as it passes through Newbury in Berkshire. This scene, taken from the West Mills swing bridge shows the canal as it heads towards the centre of the town, about to pass through Town Lock. On the right bank is the site of West Mills - Newbury was once a busy agricultural and woollen textile manufacturing centre. The tower of St Nicolas church, restored during the early 1500s stands above the surrounding buildings.

Narrow boats moored on the banks of the Kennet and Avon Canal at Monkey Bridge on the outskirts of Newbury. This image was captured late on a sunny February afternoon as the sun was beginning to go down. The Kennet and Avon Canal, 87 miles long, was constructed between 1794 and 1810 to link the Kennet and Avon rivers and thus provide a smooth transport link between Bristol and London via Reading and the Thames. It fell into disuse but has been completely restored and was reopened in 1990.

A wooden footbridge taking pedestrians and cyclists over the River Kennet in Newbury, Berkshire. Here an arm of the river has left the main stream - the Kennet and Avon Navigation - and after passing through a sluice gate rushes along just below the main waterway with further weirs adding to it. The river, through the sluices effectively controls the level of water in the canal. Strolling along the towpath of the Kennet at West Mills Newbury in Berkshire. Here a wide boat rather than the more familiar narrow boat is moored just below the swing bridge. Peaceful now, this was once a hive of activity with corn mills using the river's water to turn their waterwheels. The Kennet Navigation, becoming the Kennet and Avon Canal above the bridge, would have been busy with boats loading and unloading everything from grain and flour to Bath stone for building.

The tranquil view from the towpath near the Weavers Cottages in West Mills, Newbury belies the once-bustling corn mills powered by the River Kennet. Hovis bought the mill in 1921, which was then sold in the 1950s. The tall granary building across the river stands as a testament to its industrial history. The swing bridge on the right leads to the town centre, while the mill's sluice gates can be seen on the left. The reflections of the mill buildings and trees on the calm water of the Kennet and Avon Canal.

These canalside grade 2 listed cottages in Newbury, West Berkshire were once home to the town's prosperous weaving community. Today, their stoic beauty is captured in a monochrome view, framed by the rippled water of the Kennet and Avon canal. Plenty of activity at Lock 93, Heale's Lock, on the Kennet and Avon Canal just above Woolhampton in Berkshire, England. One narrow boat, heading downstream is waiting whilst another, coming upstream is locking through.This lock was built between 1718 and 1723 under the supervision of engineer John Hore of Newbury. Originally a turf-sided lock it was rebuilt in brick when the canal was being restored in the 1980s. After many years of neglect,The Kennet and Avon was fully reopened in 1990.

Spring is bursting out along the River Kennet at Newbury, Berkshire. Here the river splits into several channels - and just to the right, just out of sight, is the Kennet and Avon Canal. This section of the river leaves the main waterway just behind us and plunges through a weir to run swiftly along here. This is a quiet spot away from the canal's towpath. Donnington Castle is in the village of Donnington near Newbury in Berkshire, England. It dates from 1388 when Sir Richard Abberbury was given Royal permission to build fortifications. In the 15th century the castle passed into the hands of Thomas Chaucer, son of the poet Geoffrey Chaucer. Henry VIII is reported to have stayed here in 1539, as did his daughter Elizabeth I in 1568. At the start of the English Civil War it was in Parliamentary hands before being taken by the Royalists. Finally retaken by Parliament it was 'slighted' to prevent further use.
