There is no doubt in my mind as to why Icelanders dubbed this waterfall Goðafoss, or "the waterfall of the gods." This was certainly a great way to spend a Friday evening and was one of the most memorable aurora displays I've seen to date! I also felt like it was quite an accomplishment to even get a night shot at ground level of Goðafoss. The spray here was so heavy that my gear was literally dripping afterwards, so trying to get a shot that wasn't obscured by spray on the lens was not easy!

The perfect hexagonal stepping stones of the Giant's Causeway leading down into an ocean glowing pink under a fiery sunset. This UNESCO World Heritage site absolutely lived up to my expectations. It's such a different place from nearly every other seascape I've seen before. The basalt columns form perfect staircases so you can clamber all over the rocks, and even in near darkness, I felt perfectly comfortable hopping from one to the next.

You wouldn't have thought you'd see much when you arrive late at night in the Arctic Circle -- but you'd be wrong! Even in the pitch black that coats the islands for most hours in early January, the scenery around us as we drove south into the islands was stunning -- so much so that we had to pull over and see what we could capture. We were both pretty happy with what we got!

They say there's a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, so what's at the end of the aurora? Because I reckon it's just over that hill in Fludir, Iceland...

Outside the smoke sauna at Fell Centre Kiilopää, one of the gateways to northern Finland's Urho Kekkonen National Park, trickles this gorgeous stream. You may not think it so pretty when you're trying to jump into it though! I jumped in after a long sit in the sauna and its 7ºC waters actually hurt. I can't imagine what it would be like in winter -- although the Finns assured me that it's "even better" then!

A solar storm on St Patrick's Day 2013 created auroras so strong over Finnish Lapland that they actually made the snow glow green! This was taken on a tour to Kätkävaara that I signed up for at the last minute in hopes of getting out of the city and really seeing the storm. I'm so glad I did! The massive falls of Goðafoss in Iceland's north. This had to be one of my favourite waterfalls in Iceland, partially because it had so many different viewpoints and partially because I got to watch the northern lights dance over it for hours the night before! This lookout was definitely the most difficult to get to, requiring a precarious jump across wobbly rocks just upstream from the falls. Initially I decided not to try it, but after a tour bus arrived and a number of people crossed safely, I got up the nerve and managed to get across successfully. Glad I did!

The River Skjálfandafljót, which flows out the spectacular Godafoss waterfall, lighting up green underneath spectacular northern lights. Even with the slight cloud cover, the lights were clearly visible.

I finally saw the northern lights in Porjus, one year after I first went there to see them. This visit was under the full moon, so I didn't expect to see much -- but this aurora was so bright that it still sparkled in the already well-lit sky.

When we first hiked 400m up a hill in Kâtkâvaara, Finnish Lapland, to see the northern lights, our guide pointed out north and told us that was the direction the lights would come from. Then we turned south and saw this! The lights stretched from horizon to horizon that night…it was stunning.

The aurora seemingly emanating from one of the cabins at Galdotieva, near the Norwegian border in Enontekiö, Finland. Even under the full moon, the northern lights completely lit up the sky in green.

Because there is supposed to be a massive geomagnetic storm hitting the earth's atmosphere today, here's a shot from a solar storm that I witnessed. This shot of the northern lights was taken as our guide was trying to shuttle us back down to the bus at the end of our tour. Luckily, we dug in our heels and asked if we could stay for just a few more minutes, since those minutes featured the most impressive auroras I've ever seen. They were moving so quickly across the sky, with coronas wildly pulsating above our heads, that I soon gave up taking photos and simply stared at it in awe.
