St Mary's Church, Brownsea Island Number of views as of 18th March 2016 = 1000. Completed in 1854, St Mary's church on Brownsea Island (near Poole, Dorset, England) was funded by William Waugh, a former Colonel in the British Army, who purchased the island a couple of years earlier for £13,000. Waugh was also responsible for building a pottery works on the island which once employed more than 200 people, and for the construction of the now abandoned village of Maryland on the western shores of the island. The church was named for Waugh's wife Mary. Brownsea Island has been owned and managed by the National Trust since 1962 and is open to visitors during the months of April to September. *Seil Island* Number of views as of 4th April 2018 = 1240. This shot was taken from just outside the former slate-mining village of Ellenabeich, the main settlement on the Island of Seil. Seil is a small island on the east side of the Firth of Lorn, 10-12 miles south-west of Oban, Argyll, Scotland. Seil has been linked to the Scottish mainland since 1792 when Thomas Telford's Clachan Bridge (otherwise known as the Bridge Over the Atlantic) was built. The slate quarry at Ellenabeich was started by the Campbells of Breadalbane in 1745, and by 1842 new steam powered pumps meant that quarrying could take place to a depth of 250ft below sea level, in a vast pit separated from the sea by just a narrow strip of rock. A New Forest pony enjoying some fresh, green shoots at Setley Pond in the New Forest (Hampshire, England) between the towns of Brockenhurst and Sway. Originally a royal hunting park, the New Forest was created by King William the First in 1079, so it isn't really new at all. In 2005 however, it became England's 8th National Park. Roughly 90 per cent of the 225 square miles of Forest land is still owned by the crown, but is managed by the Forestry Commission. Occupiers of land in the New Forest are granted commoner's rights allowing their ponies, donkeys and cattle to roam & graze freely on the open heathland and some woodland areas. Lights of Portland Number of views as of 8th May 2016 = 1300. Portland Bill in the county of Dorset has long been regarded as one of the greatest navigational hazards along the south coast of England and has been the scene of many shipwrecks over the centuries. Today the headland is dominated by the 41 metre high red and white structure of Portland's main lighthouse. However, there are in fact 3 lighthouses to be seen close to the southern tip of the Isle of Portland (as pictured). The first lighthouse at Portland was built in 1716. It was originally coal-fired and was one of a pair of 'upper' and 'lower' lights. In 1789, Trinity House commissioned a new 'Lower Lighthouse' to replace one of the originals. Brownsea Castle Number of views as of 22nd April 2019 = 1540. The view that most people see on arrival at Brownsea Island, the largest of the eight islands within Poole Harbour, Dorset, England. The castle was built in the 16th century and was part of the south coast defence system put into place by King Henry VIII, along with Portland, Sandsfoot and Hurst. The castle was renovated during the 19th century and converted into an impressive private residence. Despite being badly damaged by fire in 1895, the castle was rebuilt and when the National Trust acquired the island in 1962, the castle was leased to the John Lewis partnership, who use it as a private hotel for employees and their families.
