Description: Paradise Garage, AKA "the Garage" was a NY discotheque notable in the history of dance and pop music, as well as LGBT and nightclub cultures, and is often referred to as "NY's Greatest Club." It opened in 1977 in SoHo and is credited with influencing modern nightclubs by promoting dancing above verbal interaction and making the DJ -- who played any and all kinds of music, as long as you could dance to it -- the center of attention. A young Madonna Ciccone would watch Chaka Khan and Gloria Gaynor there before becoming a performer herself, along with Duran Duran, Cyndi Lauper, New Order and Whitney Houston, amongst others. It’s lease was terminated in 1987, when it was converted to a Verizon truck depot before being demolished.

Description: Located, true to its name, in a parking garage on 84 King Street in Manhattan, Paradise Garage was one of the only clubs ever built for a specific DJ. As a venue, it was relatively nondescript, but what it lacked in decor it made up for with its much-revered sound system and passionate members. The sound system was developed, designed, and installed by Richard Long & Associates, and was said by club patrons to be the best in NYC, if not the world. A distinctive style of dance music known as garage house or simply "garage" originated there and the club has been credited for its influence on the modern dance club. The Garage's legend is synonymous with that of DJ Larry Levan who was the club's resident DJ during the club's entire 10-year run
