Restaurant By The Thames Hoodies

A narrowboat moored next to a restaurant, once a watermill, on the banks of the Thames at Maidenhead in Berkshire. Just behind us the river passes through Boulters Lock, the subject of paintings especially in Victorian and Edwardian times. This is Ray Mill Island and in the background a new footbridge leads over the river to Taplow. A lovely place to stop for refreshment on your journey along this beautiful river.

A digital pencil drawing of the riverside at Abingdon-on-Thames in Oxfordshire, a narrowboat moored by the bank, seen here on a sunny February day. This lovely old market town is about six miles south of Oxford, the river from here making its way towards Wallingford and Reading. St Helen's parish church lies next to the river. Dating from the early C12th, it is notable for being the second widest church in England and having five aisles!

Two people leaning on the rail of the bridge at Goring-on-Thames watching the river as it flows through the lock and weir. A calm and peaceful way to pass the time! Here the Thames flows under the bridge on its way towards Pangbourne and Reading - and thence to London and the sea. Through the bridge can be seen the Thames Path, a National trail leading from near Kemble in Gloucestershire to the Thames Barrier in London. A digital sketch from my original photograph.

A bench by the side of the River Thames near Cookham, Berkshire. A lovely place to sit, rest and watch the river traffic go by! This is the stretch of the river which inspired paintings by the artist Stanley Spencer whose home was in the village. Nearby is a gallery dedicated to his work.

A fine Edwardian house sitting on the banks of the River Thames at Caversham, Reading. Here it is seen from the Thameside Promenade, part of the Thames Path National Trail. Here the thames is often busy with leisure boating traffic - launches, rowing boats and canoes. This house and others like it along the riverbanks of course have their own boathouses - perhaps as part of the building as here!

The water mill at Hambleden on the River Thames between Henley and Marlow in Buckinghamshire. This picturesque, Grade 2 listed old mill has a long history, having been mentioned in the Domesday Book when the the rental value was £1 per year! Its location is the appropriately named Mill End, where the fast flowing Hambleden Bourne discharges into the Thames. Immediately below it is the weir, one of the longest on the Thames. From here the Chiltern Hills gradually rise to the north.

The church of St Nicholas at Remenham in Berkshire. This picturesque church and the suirrounding houses of the village sit close to the banks of the River Thames.The Thames Path (a long distamce trail) passes close by. Remenham is also close to the start of the Henley Royal Regatta course at Temple Island. The church is Norman in origin and records exist of the first rector in 1076. It also received a mention in the Domesday Book (1086). However, the building as we see it dates from 1870.

Here we are standing on the Thames Path next to Wallingford Bridge in Oxfordshire and looking over the river to the church of St Peter with its elegant open-work spire. The original church was destroyed by fire during the Civil War, the present one being built in the second half of the 18th century. It is no longer used as a regular place of worship. Wallingford stands between Oxford and Reading and was once an important royal town, the remains of its castle still standing by the river.

A digital art view of a riverside scene at Cookham in Berkshire. The late winter sunshine warms up the scene with a family feeding swans under the gold of a willow tree. Cookham, a Thames beauty spot was also home to the artist Sir Stanley Spencer who could be seen wheeling a pram laden with his paining materials round the village and riverside - the inspiration for much of his work. He is buried in the local churchyard.

Looking across the River Thames from the Thames Path just upriver from Marlow, Buckinghamshire, to the parish church of All Saints at Bisham in Berkshire. This image, from my original photograph, is produced in the style of an oil painting. . The church has a superb late Norman tower which dates from about 1175 and is here seen framed by trees and reflected in the river. Nearby is Bisham Abbey, the National Sports Centre.
