On March 4, 1933, Lawrence Hoyt opened a rental library in a leased space inside a Bridgeport, CT department store under the name Walden Book Company. By 1948 it had grown to over 250 locations in various department stores. In 1962, the company opened its first "Waldenbooks" store in the Northway Mall in Pittsburgh, PA. The 1970s were a time of extraordinary growth for Waldenbooks, with new stores opening around the country at the rate of one per week. Waldenbooks had opened its 500th store in 1978 and by 1981 it had become the first bookstore chain to have stores in every state. By the time the company was celebrating its 50th anniversary in 1983, Walden was operating 830 store...

Pay your respect to the pride of Akron with this dandy of a shirt. Rolling Acres mall opened in Akron, Ohio with Sears and 21 stores on August 6, 1975. JCPenney opened a year later as a second anchor. A new wing was added in 1977, including a third anchor store, Montgomery Ward. Further expansion in 1978 added a new two-story wing called the Promenade, which included a food court called “Prom-N-Eat” (later renamed “Picnic Place”) and local chain O’Neil’s as a fourth anchor. The mall was foreclosed in June 2016. As of October 2016, demolition of the mall had begun with full demolition on the property expected to be complete by October 2017.

K·B Toys (also known as Kay Bee Toys) was an American chain of mall-based retail toy stores. The company was founded in 1922 as Kaufman Brothers, a wholesale candy store. The company opened a wholesale toy store in 1946 and ended its candy wholesales two years later to focus entirely on the toy industry. Retail sales began in 1973 under the name Kay-Bee Toy & Hobby. By 1999, the company operated 1,324 stores across the United States and was the second-largest toy retailer in the U.S., but later declared bankruptcy in both 2004 and 2008 before going out of business in 2009. This design is based on their longest-running and therefore best-known logo design which was in use throughout the '80s and '90s.

The first Musicland store opened in 1955 in Minneapolis. The company expanded rapidly during the mall boom in the 1980s and continued to grow into the 90s, becoming the US's largest specialty retailer of entertainment products. In addition to Musicland the company also ran Sam Goody, Suncoast, OnCue, and the Media Play Superstore Chains. The Musicland Group was purchased by Best Buy in 2001 at the height of Musicland's success. By then, Musicland numbered over 1300 stores, but Best Buy failed to generate the results they were looking for, losing $85 million in 2002. Defunct record store musicland

Where shopping is always a pleasure. Caldor Inc., launched in 1951, was a leading retailer of upscale discount goods in the northeastern US. Caldor expanded rapidly beginning in the early 1980s to become the fifth largest discount chain in the nation by the early 1990s. The company sold nearly $2.5 billion worth of goods and employed a work force of more than 20,000 in 1994. A discount industry pioneer, Caldor predates the start of both Kmart and Wal-Mart by more than a decade. Despite its successes, Caldor suffered from financial issues in its later years and the company was liquidated in 1999.

In 1975 Manila, one of the buildings that became iconic until it was demolished and redesigned in 2000's was called 'Virra Mall'; its wide, glass-panelled, wedged-pyramid canopy framework acting as a natural greenhouse for the surrounding upper-level plantation underneath served as the mall's iconic structure. The re-interpretation of its logo is a tribute to that by-gone era of modern architecture influence fostered in the Philippine capital.
